Regarded as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, he is known for co-founding the Cubist movement, the invention of constructed sculpture, the co-invention of collage, and for the wide variety of styles that he helped develop and explore. Among his most famous works are the proto-Cubist Les Demoiselles d'Avignon (1907), and Guernica (1937), a dramatic portrayal of the bombing of Guernica by German and Italian air forces during the Spanish Civil War. Picasso demonstrated extraordinary artistic talent in his early years, painting in a naturalistic manner through his childhood and adolescence. During the first decade of the 20th century, his style changed as he experimented with different theories, techniques, and ideas. After 1906, the Fauvist work of the slightly older artist Henri Matisse motivated Picasso to explore more radical styles, beginning a fruitful rivalry between the two artists, who subsequently were often paired by critics as the leaders of modern art. Picasso's work is often categorized into periods. While the names of many of his later periods are debated, the most commonly accepted periods in his work are the Blue Period (1901–1904), the Rose Period (1904–1906), the African-influenced Period (1907–1909), Analytic Cubism (1909–1912), and Synthetic Cubism (1912–1919), also referred to as the Crystal period. Much of Picasso's work of the late 1910s and early 1920s is in a neoclassical style, and his work in the mid-1920s often has characteristics of Surrealism. His later work often combines elements of his earlier styles. Picasso, who was extraordinarily productive during his long life, the total number of his works being estimated at 50,000, achieved world fame and an immense fortune through his revolutionary artistic achievements and became one of the most famous figures in 20th century art. Best known for creating imaginative portrait heads made entirely of objects such as fruits, vegetables, flowers, fish and books. These works form a distinct category from his other productions. He was a conventional court painter of portraits for three Holy Roman Emperors in Vienna and Prague, also producing religious subjects and, among other things, a series of coloured drawings of exotic animals in the imperial menagerie. He specialized in grotesque symbolical compositions of fruits, animals, landscapes, or various inanimate objects arranged into human forms. The still-life portraits were clearly partly intended as whimsical curiosities to amuse the court, but critics have speculated as to how seriously they engaged with Renaissance Neo-Platonism or other intellectual currents of the day. Nude 1917 203 Art ID: Modigliani Amedeo $ 150000000 73,0 x 116,7 Oil on canvas Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, US © Bridgeman Images Request for Rent Inquire Now Artist's Story Digital room visualization | Art Mockup Studio Digital room visualization - example only | Digitale Raumvisualisierung - Beispielabbildung > < Amedeo Clemente Modigliani (born July 12, 1884 in Livorno, † January 24, 1920 in Paris) was an Italian Jewish draftsman, painter and sculptor. Today's fame is based primarily on his nudes, which were perceived as scandalous in his time. He is known for his portraits and nudes in a modern style characterized by a surreal elongation of faces, necks, and figures that weren't well received in his lifetime but are in great demand today. Modigliani spent his youth in Italy, where he studied ancient and renaissance art until he moved to Paris in 1906. There he met important artists such as Pablo Picasso and Constantin Brâncuși. Until 1912 Modigliani exhibited highly stylized sculptures with Cubists from the d'Or section in the Salon d'Automne. Modigliani had little success during his lifetime, but gained great popularity after his death. His life was marked by a lung disease. In a feverish dream he is said to have recognized his calling to art, at the age of 35 he died of tubercular meningitis. The information about Modigliani's life is based on only a few authenticated documents, so that legends were formed about him, especially after his death. Modigliani's oeuvre consists mainly of paintings and drawings. From 1909 to 1914, however, he mainly devoted himself to sculpture. The main motif is the human being, both in the pictures and in the sculptures. There are also few pictures with landscape motifs. Modigliani's interior scenes and still lifes are not known. Modigliani often referred to the Renaissance in his works, but also took up other elements such as the African art popular at the time. On the other hand, it cannot be assigned to any of the contemporary styles, such as Cubism or Fauvism. During his life Amedeo Modigliani had little success with his art, it was only after his death that he achieved greater popularity and his works of art fetched high prices. Kitchen table (Still-life with basket) 1888-1890 117 Art ID: Cezanne Paul $ 90000000 64,0 x 80,0 cm Oil on canvas Musée d‘Orsay, Paris, France Giraudon © Bridgeman Images Request for Rent Inquire Now Artist's Story Digital room visualization | Art Mockup Studio Digital room visualization - example only | Digitale Raumvisualisierung - Beispielabbildung > < Paul Cézanne (* 19 January 1839 in Aix-en-Provence; † 22 October 1906 Aix-en-Provence) was a French painter. Cézanne's work is assigned to different styles: From an art-historical point of view, Cézanne's works make him one of the pioneers of Classical Modernism. While his early works were still characterized by Romanticism - such as the murals in the Jas de Bouffan country house - and Realism, he arrived at a new pictorial language through intensive study of Impressionist forms of expression, which attempted to consolidate the deliquescent pictorial impression of Impressionist works. He abandoned the illusionistic distant effect, broke the rules established by the representatives of Academic Art, and strove for a renewal of traditional creative methods based on the Impressionist color space and color modulatory principles. His painting provoked incomprehension and ridicule among contemporary art critics. Until the late 1890s, it was mainly fellow artists such as Pissarro, Monet, and Renoir, as well as art collectors and the gallery owner Ambroise Vollard, who became aware of Cézanne's work and were among the first buyers of his paintings. Vollard opened the first solo exhibition in his Paris gallery in 1895, which led to a broader examination of the artist's work. Of the many artists who took their cue from Cézanne's work after his death, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Georges Braque and André Derain deserve special mention. The contrasting orientation of the painterly works of the aforementioned artists reveals the complexity of Cézanne's oeuvre. From an art historical point of view, Cézanne's works rank him among the pioneers of Classical Modernism. Cézanne's pictorial subjects were often bathers, the landscape around the Montagne Sainte-Victoire mountains, still lifes, and portraits of his model, his lover and later wife, Hortense Fiquet. Gauguin's Post-Impressionist work strongly influenced the Nabis and Symbolism; he was a co-founder of Synthetism and became a pioneer of Expressionism. He thus played an important role in the development of European painting. Gauguin was not appreciated until after his death and is known for his experimental use of colour and synthetic style, which differed from Impressionism. Towards the end of his life he spent ten years in French Polynesia. The paintings from this period show people or landscapes from this region. His work had an influence on the French avant-garde and many modern artists such as Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse. He is known for his relationship with Vincent and Theo van Gogh. Gauguin's art became popular after his death, partly due to the efforts of dealer Ambroise Vollard, who held exhibitions of his work late in his career and organized two important posthumous exhibitions in Paris. Gauguin was an important figure in the Symbolist movement as a painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, and writer. His expression of the inherent meaning of subjects in his paintings under the influence of the Cloisonnist style paved the way for Primitivism and a return to pastoralism. He was also an influential proponent of wood engravings and woodcuts as an art form. Paul Gauguin returned to Tahiti in the fall of 1895 and was soon plagued by physical ailments and financial difficulties. Nevertheless, in 1896-1897 he painted a group of impressive canvases in a larger format than his usual works. He painted Why are you evil? No te aha oe riri? Why Are You Angry? on an earlier Tahitian composition, but changed the mood of the painting. Here the main figures are larger and detached from each other, their postures and characters more difficult to interpret. The questioning title encourages the viewer to search for some kind of narrative, but the paintings resist a definitive reading. Why Are You Angry ? April 1768 in Venice), commonly known as Canaletto (Italian: [kanaˈletto]), was an Italian painter from the Republic of Venice, considered an important member of the 18th-century Venetian school. Painter of city views or vedute, of Venice, Rome, and London, he also painted imaginary views (referred to as capricci), although the demarcation in his works between the real and the imaginary is never quite clearcut. He was further an important printmaker using the etching technique. In the period from 1746 to 1756 he worked in England where he painted many views of London and other sites including Warwick Castle and Alnwick Castle. He was highly successful in England, thanks to the British merchant and connoisseur Joseph "Consul" Smith, whose large collection of Canaletto's works was sold to King George III in 1762. Canaletto learned painting in the workshop of his father Bernardo Canal, who produced stage sets for theatre performances. He became famous for his paintings of his hometown Venice as well as for Capricci. They are captivating because of their almost photo-realistic precision and richness of detail. To achieve this precision, he used a camera obscura as an aid. Antonio Canal is to be distinguished from his nephew Bernardo Bellotto, who worked in a very similar way and later also used the artist's name "Canaletto". Antonio Canal's works are altogether more light, mostly more cheerful and also brighter than those of his nephew. One of Canaletto's patrons and clients was the English consul in Venice Joseph Smith, who also commissioned Antonio Visentini in 1728 with the engravings for Canaletto's Venetian vedute under the title Venetiarum nobis Prospectus, thus ensuring the dissemination of the works among the English nobility travelling on the Grand Tour. The paintings were either acquired by the English nobles through Smith or ordered directly from England. Thus in 1731-1732 the 4th Duke of Bedford commissioned 24 paintings, which Antonio Canal executed from 1732 to 1736. This was followed by commissions from the 3rd Duke of Marlborough for a further 20 paintings, and in 1738 Henry Howard, 4th Earl of Carlisle, ordered 5 large-scale canvases. After the outbreak of the War of the Austrian Succession in 1740 the number of his commissions declined. In 1746 Canal went to England for ten years, after he had heard about the living conditions there from Jacopo Amigoni, who had spent several years there as an artist, and won the Duke of Richmond as a patron. The paintings he produced there have a lighter and more vivid effect. They are among the best representations of London in the 18th century. He spent the last years of his life back in Venice. His pictures became darker, but were still full of surprises. Basquiat first achieved fame as part of the graffiti duo SAMO, alongside Al Diaz, writing enigmatic epigrams in the cultural hotbed of Manhattan's Lower East Side during the late 1970s, where rap, punk, and street art coalesced into early hip-hop music culture. By the early 1980s, his paintings were being exhibited in galleries and museums internationally. At 21, Basquiat became the youngest artist to ever take part in documenta in Kassel. At 22, he was the youngest to exhibit at the Whitney Biennial in New York. The Whitney Museum of American Art held a retrospective of his art work in 1992. Basquiat's art focused on dichotomies such as wealth versus poverty, integration versus segregation, and inner versus outer experience. He appropriated poetry, drawing, and painting, and married text and image, abstraction, figuration, and historical information mixed with contemporary critique. He used social commentary in his paintings as a tool for introspection and for identifying with his experiences in the Black community of his time, as well as attacks on power structures and systems of racism. His visual poetics were acutely political and direct in their criticism of colonialism and support for class struggle. Since Basquiat's death at the age of 27 from a heroin overdose in 1988, his work has steadily increased in value. He is considered one of the most important artists of the Italian High Renaissance. His work is admired for its clarity of form, its simple composition and its visual realisation of the Neoplatonic ideal of human greatness. Together with Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci, he forms the traditional trinity of the great masters of the period. Raffael was enormously productive, ran an unusually large workshop and left behind a large body of work despite his early death at the age of 37. Many of his works are in the Vatican Palace, where the Raphael Rooms of frescoes are the central and largest work of his career. The most famous work is the School of Athens in the Vatican Stanza della Segnatura. After his early years in Rome, much of his work was executed by his workshop from his drawings, with considerable loss of quality. He was extremely influential during his lifetime, although his work was known outside Rome mainly from his collaborative printmaking. Madonna of the Meadow Artist's Story More from This Artist... The term "Impressionism" derives from the title of his painting Impression, soleil levant (Impression, Sunrise), exhibited in 1874 at the first Salon des Refusés (Exhibition of the Committee), which Monet and his collaborators organised as an alternative to the Salon de Paris. The early work up to the mid-1860s comprises realistic paintings, some of which Monet exhibited at the Paris Salon. In the late 1860s Claude Monet began to paint Impressionist paintings. An example of his paintings from this creative period is Impression, Sunrise, a harbour view of Le Havre, which gave the name to the whole movement. He thus moved away from the taste of the time, influenced by the traditional art academies, which worsened his financial situation. In the 1870s Monet took part in some of the Impressionist exhibitions, which also included artists such as Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Edgar Degas, and was particularly encouraged by the art dealer Paul Durand-Ruel. Monet's desire to document the French landscape led him to paint the same scene over and over again to capture the changing light and passing of the seasons. From 1883 Monet lived in Giverny, where he bought a house and land and began an extensive landscape project that included lily ponds, which would become the subject of his most famous works. He began painting the water lilies in 1899, first in vertical views with a Japanese bridge as the central feature, and later in the series of large-scale paintings that occupied him continuously for the next 20 years of his life. Monet's financial situation remained strained until the 1890s. It was during this period that Monet developed the concept of the series, according to which he painted a motif in different light moods. He also began to lay out his famous garden in Giverny, which he subsequently also used as a motif for his paintings. His major works include paintings, murals, sketches and other art objects, many of which are on display at the Vienna Secession Gallery. Klimt's main motif was the female body, and his works are characterized by an overt eroticism - nowhere is this more evident than in his numerous pencil drawings. Klimt's work is characterized by the elegant golden or colored decoration, often phallic in form, that conceals the more erotic positions of the drawings on which many of his paintings are based. This can be seen in Judith I (1901) and in The Kiss (1907-1908) and especially in Danaë (1907). One of the most common subjects Klimt used was that of the dominant woman, the femme fatale. Art historians note a variety of influences that contribute to Klimt's distinctive style, including Egyptian, Minoan, classical Greek, and Byzantine inspirations. Klimt also drew inspiration from the engravings of Albrecht Dürer, late medieval European painting, and the Japanese Rimpa school. His mature works are characterized by a rejection of earlier naturalistic styles and use symbols or symbolic elements to convey psychological ideas and emphasize art's "freedom" from traditional culture. 203, Amedeo Modigliani
117, Paul Cezanne
140, Paul Gauguin
Why Are You Angry ? 1896 140 Art ID: Gauguin Paul $ 100000000 95,3 x 130,5 cm Oil on canvas Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL, USA © akg-images Request for Rent Inquire Now Artist's Story Digital room visualization | Art Mockup Studio Digital room visualization - example only | Digitale Raumvisualisierung - Beispielabbildung > < Eugène Henri Paul Gauguin (* 7 June 1848 in Paris; † 8 May 1903 in Atuona on Hiva Oa, French Polynesia) was an influential French painter. 80, Canaletto Giovanni Antonio Canal
