  • 40, Pieter Brueghel the Elder

1568 The Peasant Wedding Brueghel the Elder Pieter 114,0 x 164,0 cm Oil on panel Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, Austria © ARTOTHEK Artist's Story Inquire Now 40 Art ID: Pieter Brueghel the Elder * c. 1525 probably in Breda; † 9 September 1569 in Brussels), called de Drol "the Droll" or "Peasant Brueghel", was a painter of the Dutch Renaissance. He is popularly known for his depictions of peasant life in the Duchy of Brabant (Netherlands and Flanders) in the 16th century. Pieter Brueghel the Elder was known for his landscapes and peasant scenes (so-called genre painting); he was a pioneer in making both types of subject the focus in large paintings. He was a formative influence on Dutch Golden Age painting and later painting in general in his innovative choices of subject matter, as one of the first generation of artists to grow up when religious subjects had ceased to be the natural subject matter of painting. He also painted no portraits, the other mainstay of Netherlandish art. After his training and travels to Italy, he returned in 1555 to settle in Antwerp, where he worked mainly as a prolific designer of prints for the leading publisher of the day. Only towards the end of the decade did he switch to make painting his main medium, and all his famous paintings come from the following period of little more than a decade before his early death, when he was probably in his early forties, and at the height of his powers. As well as looking forwards, his art reinvigorates medieval subjects such as marginal drolleries of ordinary life in illuminated manuscripts, and the calendar scenes of agricultural labours set in landscape backgrounds, and puts these on a much larger scale than before, and in the expensive medium of oil painting. He does the same with the fantastic and anarchic world developed in Renaissance prints and book illustrations. He is sometimes referred to as "Peasant Brueghel", to distinguish him from the many later painters in his family, including his son Pieter Brueghel the Younger (1564–1638). From 1559, he dropped the 'h' from his name and signed his paintings as Brueghel; his relatives continued to use "Brueghel" or "Breughel". • 135, Thomas Eakins

1871 Max Schmitt in a Single Scull Eakins Thomas 82,6 x 117,5 cm Oil on canvas The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA © Bridgeman Images Artist's Story Inquire Now 135 Art ID: Thomas Cowperthwait Eakins (* 25 July 1844 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; † 25 June 1916 Philadelphia) was a US realist painter, photographer, sculptor, and fine arts educator. He is widely acknowledged to be one of the most important American artists. For the length of his professional career, from the early 1870s until his health began to fail some 40 years later, Eakins worked exactingly from life, choosing as his subject the people of his hometown of Philadelphia. He painted several hundred portraits, usually of friends, family members, or prominent people in the arts, sciences, medicine, and clergy. Taken en masse, the portraits offer an overview of the intellectual life of contemporary Philadelphia; individually, they are incisive depictions of thinking persons. In addition, Eakins produced a number of large paintings that brought the portrait out of the drawing room and into the offices, streets, parks, rivers, arenas, and surgical amphitheaters of his city. These active outdoor venues allowed him to paint the subject that most inspired him: the nude or lightly clad figure in motion. In the process, he could model the forms of the body in full sunlight, and create images of deep space utilizing his studies in perspective. Eakins also took a keen interest in the new technologies of motion photography, a field in which he is now seen as an innovator. No less important in Eakins' life was his work as a teacher. As an instructor he was a highly influential presence in American art. The difficulties which beset him as an artist seeking to paint the portrait and figure realistically were paralleled and even amplified in his career as an educator, where behavioral and sexual scandals truncated his success and damaged his reputation. Eakins was a controversial figure whose work received little by way of official recognition during his lifetime. Since his death, he has been celebrated by American art historians as "the strongest, most profound realist in nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century American art". • 209, Juan Gris

1887-1927 Violin and Guitar Gris Juan 100,3 x 65,4 cm Oil on canvas Private Collection © Christie‘s Images Ltd – ARTOTHEK Artist's Story Inquire Now 209 Art ID: Juan Gris (* 23 March 1887 in Madrid; † 11 May 1927 in Boulogne-sur-Seine, France; real name José Victoriano Carmelo Carlos González-Pérez) was a Spanish painter. Gris incorporated the new design principles of Cubism into a rational system and throughout his career endeavoured to convey his artistic approach theoretically as well. Along with Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, he is the main representative of synthetic cubism. Gris mainly painted still lifes in which he placed pictorial elements next to and on top of each other as a collage. In 1913, the year of Violin and Guitar, Juan Gris had completely assimilated the Cubist principles, through his knowledge of the work of Picasso and Braque and his own research on Cézanne. However, Gris was never an academic Cubist, like so many who went so far as to create a Cubist rulebook without understanding the challenges of the new visual language. Gris elaborates his own, unique vocabulary based on solid, scientific training, on the realist painting tradition and on the poetic and autonomous conception of the picture, creating his own idiosyncratic style. Before Cubism, all art obeyed the convention of perspective. This was the technique that artists had used since the Renaissance to arrange objects in space. However, perspective only works from one fixed viewpoint and the Cubists believed that it was a limited visualization technique which did not reflect the way that we see the world. Their aim was to develop a new way of seeing which reflected the complexity of the modern age. In Cubist still lifes, artists depict real objects but not from a fixed viewpoint as in perspective. They combine different viewpoints of a subject in the one image. The whole idea of space is rearranged – the front, back and sides of the subject become interchangeable elements. Cubist images combine the artist’s observation with their memory of the subject to create a poetic evocation of the theme, and still life which offers the artist total control of the lighting and composition of the subject, is the genre most suited to the style. Still life was the most popular of the cubist themes as it allowed artists to use everyday objects whose forms were still recognizable after they had been simplified and stylized. Still Life before an Open Window, Place Ravignan is a great example of Gris' cubist style. It contains some of the traditional objects commonly associated with still life: a bowl of fruit, a bottle and a glass, a newspaper and a book, all carefully arranged on a table top at a balcony window. The objects are lit by electric light which contrasts with the moonlit scene outside the window. The subject may have been clichéd and predictable, but its arrangement was revolutionary. Juan Gris was more calculating than any other Cubist painter in the way he composed his pictures. Every element of a painting was considered with classical precision: line, shape, tone, colour and pattern were carefully refined to create an interlocking arrangement free from any unnecessary decoration or detail. • 22, Albrecht Duerer

1503 Great Piece of Turf Duerer Albrecht 41,0 x 31,5 cm Watercolor, pen and ink, mounted on cardboard Albertina, Graphische Sammlung, Wien, Austria © ARTOTHEK Artist's Story Inquire Now 22 Art ID: Albrecht Dürer the Younger (also Duerer; * 21 May 1471 in Nuremberg; † 6 April 1528 Nuremberg) was a German painter, graphic artist, mathematician and art theorist. His paintings, drawings, copper engravings and woodcuts make him one of the outstanding representatives of the Renaissance. Dürer established his reputation and influence across Europe when he was in his twenties due to his high-quality woodcut prints. He was associated with the most important Italian artists of his time, including Raphael, Giovanni Bellini and Leonardo da Vinci, and was patronised by Emperor Maximilian I from 1512. Dürer was recognised by both the Lutheran and Episcopal churches. Dürer's vast body of work includes engravings, his preferred technique in his later prints, altarpieces, portraits and self-portraits, watercoulors and books. The woodcuts are more Gothic than the rest of his work. His well-known engravings include the three master engravings Knight, Death and the Devil (1513), St Jerome in his Study (1514) and Melencolia I (1514). His watercolours mark him as one of the first European landscape artists, while his woodcuts revolutionised this medium. Dürer's introduction of classical motifs into northern art through his knowledge of Italian artists and German humanists secured his reputation as one of the most important figures of the northern Renaissance. This is underpinned by his theoretical treatises, which include principles of mathematics, perspective and ideal proportions. Albrecht Dürer was one of the most influential, versatile and important personalities in European art and is therefore often considered Germany's most famous painter. Unlike many of his contemporaries and predecessors, he was one of the few artists who also dealt with the creation of art in theory. It is therefore not surprising that, in addition to his numerous paintings, copperplate engravings and woodcuts, he also published several books dealing, for example, with human proportions or geometry. However, Dürer's fame is undoubtedly due in large part to his numerous pictures, which are rich in detail. In these he was always intent on depicting nature as faithfully as possible and showing every detail, no matter how small. An achievement that no other painter before or after him could surpass. In his home town of Nuremberg, Albrecht Dürer is one of the most important personalities and is still revered today. The Germanic National Museum located there conducts extensive research on the artist and also exhibits some of his works. In addition, there is the Albrecht Dürer House, a unique memorial site where Dürer himself lived and worked for almost 20 years. Today, the well-preserved and renovated burgher's house from 1420 is extensively museumised, making a visit worthwhile for everyone. Great Piece of Turf Artist's Story More from This Artist... • 70, Diego Rodriguez de Silva y Velasquez

1656 Las Meninas de Silva y Velasquez Diego Rodriguez 318,0 x 276,0 cm Oil on canvas Museo del Prado, Madrid, Spain © Bridgeman Images Artist's Story Inquire Now 70 Art ID: Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez[a] (baptized June 6, 1599 – August 6, 1660) was a Spanish painter, the leading artist in the court of King Philip IV of Spain and Portugal, and of the Spanish Golden Age. He was an individualistic artist of the contemporary Baroque period (c. 1600-1750). He began to paint in a precise tenebrist style, later developing a freer manner characterized by bold brushwork. In addition to numerous renditions of scenes of historical and cultural significance, he painted scores of portraits of the Spanish royal family and commoners, culminating in his masterpiece Las Meninas (1656). Velázquez's artwork became a model for 19th-century realist and impressionist painters. In the 20th century, artists such as Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí and Francis Bacon paid tribute to Velázquez by re-interpreting some of his most iconic images.
