Very little is known about Hubert's life; all that is known for certain is that he enrolled in the religious "Society of Mary with the Rays" in Ghent in 1421-1422. Hubert van Eyck achieved great fame through the inscription on the frame of the Ghent altar. It reads: "The painter Hubert van Eyck, there was no greater, began this work and his brother Johann, the second in this art, completed the difficult task on behalf of Judocus Vijd. By these verses he entrusts to your care that which came into being on May 6." Hidden in the last line is a chronogram consisting of red letters, which gives the date 1432. However, as an X-ray examination in 1950 showed, the inscription was probably applied later. Investigations in the course of the recent restoration of the altar, which has been ongoing since 2012, have shown that the inscription was written directly on the first version of the frame, contrary to previous assumptions, and could therefore be original after all. On the basis of this inscription, art historians have long tried to separate Hubert's part from Jan's in the Ghent altar. In 1979, Van Asperen de Boer used infrared reflectography to get to the bottom of the cult of Hubert. The signature on the altar unmistakably shows only one handwriting, namely that of Jan van Eyck. In his 1995 study of the Ghent Altarpiece, Volker Herzner was able to prove that Hubert died completely impoverished, that not a single work of his has survived and that the relationship to Jan is more than questionable. Nils Büttner sees the motives for the addition of the inscription in the local patriotism of 16th century Ghent. For Jan van Eyck came from Bruges and was therefore not from Ghent, while Hubert, who happened to have the same name, was documented as a Ghent painter. Ghent and Bruges had always been in competition. It was popular among humanist scholars to celebrate their own hometown with a praise of the city. Of course, it was not acceptable that the city's most famous work of art had been created by a foreigner. Because Hubert van Eyck's name had been handed down in Ghent, he was unceremoniously made the brother of Jan van Eyck and placed before the foreign Jan. The specific occasion - always according to Büttner's hypothesis - was the assembly of the Order of the Golden Fleece in Ghent's St. Bavo's Cathedral in 1559, for which the church was decorated. At that time, a poem praising Hubert van Eyck as the master of the altar was placed in the chapel where the Ghent altar stood. He was an individualistic artist of the contemporary Baroque period (c. 1600-1750). He began to paint in a precise tenebrist style, later developing a freer manner characterized by bold brushwork. In addition to numerous renditions of scenes of historical and cultural significance, he painted scores of portraits of the Spanish royal family and commoners, culminating in his masterpiece Las Meninas (1656). Velázquez's artwork became a model for 19th-century realist and impressionist painters. In the 20th century, artists such as Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí and Francis Bacon paid tribute to Velázquez by re-interpreting some of his most iconic images. His paintings, drawings, copper engravings and woodcuts make him one of the outstanding representatives of the Renaissance. Dürer established his reputation and influence across Europe when he was in his twenties due to his high-quality woodcut prints. He was associated with the most important Italian artists of his time, including Raphael, Giovanni Bellini and Leonardo da Vinci, and was patronised by Emperor Maximilian I from 1512. Dürer was recognised by both the Lutheran and Episcopal churches. Dürer's vast body of work includes engravings, his preferred technique in his later prints, altarpieces, portraits and self-portraits, watercoulors and books. The woodcuts are more Gothic than the rest of his work. His well-known engravings include the three master engravings Knight, Death and the Devil (1513), St Jerome in his Study (1514) and Melencolia I (1514). His watercolours mark him as one of the first European landscape artists, while his woodcuts revolutionised this medium. Dürer's introduction of classical motifs into northern art through his knowledge of Italian artists and German humanists secured his reputation as one of the most important figures of the northern Renaissance. This is underpinned by his theoretical treatises, which include principles of mathematics, perspective and ideal proportions. Albrecht Dürer was one of the most influential, versatile and important personalities in European art and is therefore often considered Germany's most famous painter. Unlike many of his contemporaries and predecessors, he was one of the few artists who also dealt with the creation of art in theory. It is therefore not surprising that, in addition to his numerous paintings, copperplate engravings and woodcuts, he also published several books dealing, for example, with human proportions or geometry. However, Dürer's fame is undoubtedly due in large part to his numerous pictures, which are rich in detail. In these he was always intent on depicting nature as faithfully as possible and showing every detail, no matter how small. An achievement that no other painter before or after him could surpass. In his home town of Nuremberg, Albrecht Dürer is one of the most important personalities and is still revered today. The Germanic National Museum located there conducts extensive research on the artist and also exhibits some of his works. In addition, there is the Albrecht Dürer House, a unique memorial site where Dürer himself lived and worked for almost 20 years. Today, the well-preserved and renovated burgher's house from 1420 is extensively museumised, making a visit worthwhile for everyone. His work defined the premise of pop art through parody. Inspired by the comic strip, Lichtenstein produced precise compositions that documented while they parodied, often in a tongue-in-cheek manner. His work was influenced by popular advertising and the comic book style. His artwork was considered to be "disruptive". He described pop art as "not 'American' painting but actually industrial painting". His paintings were exhibited at the Leo Castelli Gallery in New York City. The first topics that brought Lichtenstein’s work to public attention was appropriated from comic strips, but his later themes owed their visual syntax to themes from “high” culture, particularly the history of modern art. Pictured here is an example of his interpretations of Oskar Schlemmer's Bauhaus Staircase, In any case, his sense of irony is coupled with a strikingly positive spirit. Lichtenstein extended his source material to art history, including the work of Claude Monet and Pablo Picasso, and experimented with three-dimensional works. During a trip to Los Angeles in 1978, Lichtenstein became fascinated by lawyer Robert Gore Rifkind’s collection of German Expressionist prints and illustrated books, and in 1980 began exploring the Expressionist stylistic vocabulary in paintings such as The White Tree, which evokes the lyricism of Der Blaue Reiter landscapes, and Expressionist Head that mimics Erich Heckel’s 1919 woodcut, Portrait of a Man. Lichtenstein also created a number of small pencil drawings that he used as templates for woodcuts, a medium favoured by Emile Nolde and Max Pechstein among other Expressionist artists. The culmination of this exploration was the Expressionist Woodcut Series, 1980. This set of seven woodcuts includes motifs that echo the Expressionist masterpieces, such as Dr. Waldmann, which recalls Otto Dix’s Dr. Mayer-Hermann, 1926, and Reclining Nude: an addition to Lichtenstein’s repertoire of iconography that had hitherto excluded nude figures. Lichtenstein’s use of appropriated imagery has influenced artists such as Richard Prince, Jeff Koons and Raymond Pettibon.
