Brief Biography | Artistic Background
Julia Geist is a German contemporary artist whose practice explores female presence, identity, emotional intensity and the tension between structure and intuition. Working primarily in mixed media on canvas, she has developed an independent visual language centred on abstract portraiture, figurative abstraction and non-figurative compositions.
A self-taught artist, Geist approaches painting without the restrictions of an academic system. Her work emerges through movement, reduction, colour and an intuitive sense of composition. Strong chromatic contrasts, layered pictorial elements and expressive gestures create images that combine immediacy with a carefully controlled aesthetic structure.
Alongside her artistic practice, Geist has been working successfully in investment banking for many years, advising corporate multinational clients on risk management through tailored derivative solutions. The analytical discipline, focus and professionalism required in her professional career form an important counterpoint to the intuitive freedom of her painting. This duality – structure and emotion, calculation and spontaneity – is central to her artistic identity.
Her practice encompasses three principal areas: abstract portraits, abstract figurative works and abstract compositions. Within these groups, her strongest recurring focus is the female portrait. At THE ART HUB, our mission is initially focused on addressing a profound imbalance within the art world, specifically catering to women artists. In the current landscape, a mere 5% to 15% of artworks traded at auctions are created by women, starkly contrasted by the overwhelming 85% to 95% of works by male artists. This disparity is not only confined to auctions but is also prevalent in exhibitions, where male-created art significantly overshadows that of their female counterparts.
By concentrating our efforts on female artists, THE ART HUB aims to counteract this imbalance and champion women within the art community. This initiative is designed to amplify the visibility of women artists, making their creations more accessible to a wider audience, and ultimately striving for a more balanced representation of genders within art auctions and exhibitions. By prioritizing women in art, our platform boldly advocates for equality and diversity within the art sector, signaling a commitment to reshaping and enriching the cultural landscape.
Curatorial Statement
Julia Geist’s paintings occupy the space between control and release. Their visual energy develops from the encounter of clearly structured composition with an intuitive, emotionally driven painting process.
This tension reflects the two worlds that define her biography. In her professional career, Geist operates in an environment shaped by analytical discipline, professional expertise and complex decision-making. In the studio, these structures are not abandoned but transformed. Colour, gesture, surface and composition become a different form of decision-making – immediate, physical and emotional.
Her female portraits form the most distinctive group within her practice. They are neither conventional likenesses nor idealised representations. Instead, Geist reduces and transforms facial features until personality becomes presence. Eyes, contours, colour fields and fragmented forms function less as descriptive elements than as carriers of attitude.
The women in her paintings do not ask to be interpreted through traditional categories of beauty or femininity. They confront the viewer with confidence and psychological intensity. Their power lies not in theatrical dominance but in their ability to occupy pictorial space without apology.
Works such as “Don’t call me cute!” make this position particularly explicit. The title itself rejects a reductive or decorative reading of the female image. The portrait becomes a statement about autonomy, visibility and self-definition – qualities that recur throughout Geist’s body of work.
In “Trinity”, the interaction between figuration, abstraction and compositional structure becomes particularly evident.
