Elena Shichko

Born 1976 in Minsk, Belarus

Lives and works in Chemnitz, Germany

Artist | Painting, Printmaking, Graphics, Photography

Brief Biography

Elena Shichko is a Belarusian-born artist based in Chemnitz, Germany. Born in 1976 in Minsk, she works across painting, printmaking, graphics and photography. Her artistic language can be described as romantic fantasy realism, combining recognizable elements of the visible world with imaginative, symbolically charged spaces.

In her works, reality and fiction enter into dialogue. Nature, human presence and everyday objects are transformed into poetic visual narratives, shaped by decorative structures, luminous colors and a distinctive sense of atmosphere. Her compositions often place realistically rendered motifs within newly imagined environments, where perspective, space and ornament follow their own poetic logic.

Elena Shichko studied at the Graphic Fine Art Department of the Belarusian State Academy of Arts and later continued her artistic development through the Creative Art Studios of Painting and Sculpture of the Ministry of Culture of Belarus. She also completed postgraduate studies at the Institute of Art Criticism, Ethnography and Folklore of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and received her PhD in Art Criticism in 2011.

She is a member of the Union of Artists of Belarus and has participated in numerous national and international exhibitions. Her works have received awards and distinctions and are represented in museum and private collections in Belarus and internationally.

Our Mission and Actions

At THE ART HUB, our mission is initially focused on addressing a profound imbalance within the art world, specifically catering to women artists. In the current landscape, a mere 5% to 15% of artworks traded at auctions are created by women, starkly contrasted by the overwhelming 85% to 95% of works by male artists. This disparity is not only confined to auctions but is also prevalent in exhibitions, where male-created art significantly overshadows that of their female counterparts.

By concentrating our efforts on female artists, THE ART HUB aims to counteract this imbalance and champion women within the art community. This initiative is designed to amplify the visibility of women artists, making their creations more accessible to a wider audience, and ultimately striving for a more balanced representation of genders within art auctions and exhibitions. By prioritizing women in art, our platform boldly advocates for equality and diversity within the art sector, signaling a commitment to reshaping and enriching the cultural landscape.

Artist Statement

In my artistic practice, I explore the relationship between reality and imagination through the language of symbolic and decorative painting. Working within the framework of romantic fantasy realism, I combine recognizable figurative forms with imagined spaces, where the rules of perspective and composition become intentionally poetic and open to interpretation.

Nature, mythology, memory, and human emotion are central themes in my work. I am interested in the hidden meanings behind visible forms — the symbolic dimension of flowers, animals, objects, and natural phenomena. Through metaphor and visual storytelling, I create paintings that invite the viewer into multilayered narratives shaped by transformation, beauty, fragility, and inner tension.

Color plays a particularly important role in my artistic language. I work with saturated, luminous colors and decorative textures, using them not only to create visual harmony, but also to intensify emotional and symbolic content. Decorative elements in my paintings are never merely ornamental; they form an essential part of the conceptual structure of the work.

Many of my paintings reinterpret myths, philosophical ideas, and cultural symbols from a contemporary perspective. I am interested in how ancient narratives continue to resonate within modern human experience, especially in times marked by uncertainty, ecological anxiety, and the search for identity and inner balance.

My works often move between beauty and inner unrest, harmony and hidden conflict, reality and illusion. Through this tension, I seek to create spaces for reflection, where the viewer may encounter not only the image itself, but also their own associations, memories, and emotional responses.
