Biography
For Canadian-based visual artist Sonja Kobrehel, the canvas is a stage where feeling, form, pattern, and light play together. Her abstract and semi-abstract paintings, collages, drawings, and mixed-media works invite slow looking—revealing layered color, subtle line, and symbolic motifs that prompt reflection in a fast-paced world.
Born in Subotica (former Yugoslavia) and trained at the Academy of Arts, Novi Sad, Kobrehel lived and worked in Vancouver for two decades before relocating her studio to Powell River, British Columbia. Though classically educated in Europe, she consciously situates her practice within Canadian contemporary art. Over the last thirty years she has exhibited widely in Canada, the U.S., and Europe. Her work has appeared in publications including Lounge (art/design), Raum & Wohnen (architecture/design), Artintervention, ArtTour International, and the Encyclopedia of Contemporary Artists of Vajdaság. Elements of Székely-Hungarian Rovás script—drawn from family heritage—frequently surface in her imagery as visual signs rather than literal text.
Selected distinctions include Best of Show (Anacortes Arts Festival, WA), honors at Art Spacific (Delta, BC) and Oil & Water (Tsawwassen, BC), Vancity Art Specific (BC), Best Of 123 SOHO (New York), and an honorable mention from Artrepreneur’s “Turquoise” open call.

Our Mission and Actions
At THE ART HUB, our mission is initially focused on addressing a profound imbalance within the art world, specifically catering to women artists. In the current landscape, a mere 5% to 15% of artworks traded at auctions are created by women, starkly contrasted by the overwhelming 85% to 95% of works by male artists. This disparity is not only confined to auctions but is also prevalent in exhibitions, where male-created art significantly overshadows that of their female counterparts.
By concentrating our efforts on female artists, THE ART HUB aims to counteract this imbalance and champion women within the art community. This initiative is designed to amplify the visibility of women artists, making their creations more accessible to a wider audience, and ultimately striving for a more balanced representation of genders within art auctions and exhibitions. By prioritizing women in art, our platform boldly advocates for equality and diversity within the art sector, signaling a commitment to reshaping and enriching the cultural landscape.

Statement
My visual art reflects constant change and lived experience. I am guided by feelings, thoughts, dreams, and visions. I’m inspired by traces of the people who came before us—clues to what they did and why. Travel is integral to my process: every place and culture reveals its beauty in everyday life, and those encounters become part of my work.
I often use symbols to build a personal iconography. These signs point to many facets of my life, yet most paintings begin with a color idea and then evolve into compositions where color remains the central subject.
I work in collage and mixed media on paper and canvas—combining materials freely and paying close attention to surface: carving, scratching, gluing, and layering to create a visual dialogue. I complete each piece with drawing techniques and whatever else the work requires to communicate my intended vision.
