Biography | Artistic Journey

Flight to Freedom, Art as Destiny –
A Journey of Courage and Expressiveness

Just before her departure from the GDR, Kerstin Arnold stood one last time before the Sistine Madonna in Dresden. She knew she might never see this masterpiece again—a moment filled with awe, yet also a silent promise to herself. The Madonna’s grace and strength, the timeless presence in her gaze, had always inspired her. In that instant, she realized that art was not only a means of expression but her true calling. With this inner image in her heart, she took the bold step toward an uncertain future in the West.

She refused the preordained, state‑controlled path of an art degree—its boundaries too narrow, its prescribed direction too alien. Instead, she chose a radical new beginning, armed with nothing but a suitcase and an unshakable will to discover her own artistic voice.

This fresh start demanded courage, adaptability, and an unwavering devotion to painting. Kerstin taught herself everything—through countless hours of experimentation, studying the great masters, and honing her technique. Today, her work is characterized by a unique creative process: layer by layer, figures and backgrounds emerge, rendered almost realistically in acrylic and oil. Using palette knives, bristle brushes, and translucent glazes, she imbues each piece with a depth that draws the viewer into an emotional realm.

Her art has gained international acclaim and features in both private and public collections. Highlights of her career include the acquisition of her works by the Saarland state art holdings, where they are displayed in venues such as the state parliament. Through her art—which often explores the complexity and strength of women—Kerstin Arnold pursues a clear vision: to reveal the human essence and tell stories that resonate far beyond the canvas. Today, she lives and works in Saarbrücken, where she celebrates her creative freedom anew each day.

Our Mission and Actions

At THE ART HUB, our mission is initially focused on addressing a profound imbalance within the art world, specifically catering to women artists. In the current landscape, a mere 5% to 15% of artworks traded at auctions are created by women, starkly contrasted by the overwhelming 85% to 95% of works by male artists. This disparity is not only confined to auctions but is also prevalent in exhibitions, where male-created art significantly overshadows that of their female counterparts.

By concentrating our efforts on female artists, THE ART HUB aims to counteract this imbalance and champion women within the art community. This initiative is designed to amplify the visibility of women artists, making their creations more accessible to a wider audience, and ultimately striving for a more balanced representation of genders within art auctions and exhibitions. By prioritizing women in art, our platform boldly advocates for equality and diversity within the art sector, signaling a commitment to reshaping and enriching the cultural landscape.

Artist Statement

Between Light and Shadow: Stories Told in Color

In my art, reality and symbolism merge into a visual narrative of life’s challenges and beauties. My works are a window into a world that is at once personal and universal—shaped by strength, resilience, and the capacity to find hope in the darkest moments. Each painting invites the viewer to pause, draw connections, and reflect on the fundamental questions of human existence.

Rooted in my own experiences—escaping a regime, beginning anew in a foreign land, and the struggles for mental and physical fortitude—my work weaves in themes of freedom, boundaries, and life’s fragility. I often employ symbols that at first glance seem familiar but reveal deeper layers of thought and feeling. Disassembled dolls, chains, or old theater posters speak of captivity and the search for self‑determination. Vanitas motifs, such as skulls and beetles, remind us of mortality, while vibrant colors radiate hope and joie de vivre—a balance between melancholy and optimism that drives me.

My painting style leans toward the almost‑realistic, offering viewers the chance to draw their own parallels and see themselves in the images. Through this precise visual language, I build a bridge between observation and emotion, between individual experience and collective narrative. It is not merely about depicting beauty but about inviting contemplation on community, strength, and the power of transformation.

I view my art as a space where stories come alive and encourage us to transcend ourselves. It challenges us to embrace both life’s absurdities and its deepest joys—and to move forward with courage and confidence. In a world that often feels polarized and frenetic, I hope my work contributes to a culture of reflection, respect, and connectedness.
