Francisco de Zurbarán (baptised 7 November 1598 in Fuente de Cantos in Extremadura; † 27 August 1664 in Madrid) was a Spanish painter from the Golden Age ("Siglo de Oro") of Iberian Baroque art. He is known primarily for his religious paintings depicting monks, nuns, and martyrs, and for his still lifes. Zurbarán gained the nickname "Spanish Caravaggio," owing to the forceful use of chiaroscuro in which he excelled.
He was the father of the painter Juan de Zurbarán.
