Edward Hopper (* 22 July 1882 in Nyack, New York; † 15 May 1967 in New York City, New York) was an American Realist painter and printmaker. While he is best known for his oil paintings, he was equally proficient in etching as a watercolorist and graphic artist. His career benefited significantly from his marriage to fellow artist Josephine Nivison, who contributed much to his work both as a life model and as a creative partner. Hopper was a minor-key artist who created muted drama from everyday subjects layered with poetic meaning, often inviting unintended narrative interpretation. He was praised for the "utter truth" in the America he portrayed.
