Op-Art or optical art is a style of visual art from the 1960s that uses precise abstract formal patterns and geometric colour figures to create surprising or irritating optical effects, the idea of movement, flicker effects and optical illusions in the viewer.

Op Art stems from the experimental traditions of the Bauhaus and Russian Constructivism: both schools erected a strict dividing line between the phenomena of light and colour, which is justified by the different reception of each. Light can be perceived in space as an immaterial state of movement - colour has a material bond to a surface and needs light to be perceived. This fundamental distinction between spatial light and planar colour gives rise to two forms of optical art.
