  • 124, Claude Monet

1899 Bridge over a Pond of Water Lilies Monet Claude 93,0 x 74,0 cm Oil on canvas The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA © Hansmann – ARTOTHEK Artist's Story Inquire Now 124 Art ID: Claude Monet (* 14 November 1840 in Paris; † 5 December 1926 in Giverny, born Oscar-Claude Monet) was a French painter, a founder of French Impressionist painting and the most consistent and prolific exponent of that movement's philosophy of expressing one's perceptions in front of nature, particularly in relation to landscape painting in the open air. The term "Impressionism" derives from the title of his painting Impression, soleil levant (Impression, Sunrise), exhibited in 1874 at the first Salon des Refusés (Exhibition of the Committee), which Monet and his collaborators organised as an alternative to the Salon de Paris. The early work up to the mid-1860s comprises realistic paintings, some of which Monet exhibited at the Paris Salon. In the late 1860s Claude Monet began to paint Impressionist paintings. An example of his paintings from this creative period is Impression, Sunrise, a harbour view of Le Havre, which gave the name to the whole movement. He thus moved away from the taste of the time, influenced by the traditional art academies, which worsened his financial situation. In the 1870s Monet took part in some of the Impressionist exhibitions, which also included artists such as Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Edgar Degas, and was particularly encouraged by the art dealer Paul Durand-Ruel. Monet's desire to document the French landscape led him to paint the same scene over and over again to capture the changing light and passing of the seasons. From 1883 Monet lived in Giverny, where he bought a house and land and began an extensive landscape project that included lily ponds, which would become the subject of his most famous works. He began painting the water lilies in 1899, first in vertical views with a Japanese bridge as the central feature, and later in the series of large-scale paintings that occupied him continuously for the next 20 years of his life. Monet's financial situation remained strained until the 1890s. It was during this period that Monet developed the concept of the series, according to which he painted a motif in different light moods. He also began to lay out his famous garden in Giverny, which he subsequently also used as a motif for his paintings. • 200, Amedeo Modigliani

1919 Woman with a Fan Modigliani Amedeo 100,0 x 65,0 cm Oil on canvas Musée National d’Art Moderne, Centre Pompidou, Paris, France © Peter Willi – ARTOTHEK Artist's Story Inquire Now 200 Art ID: Amedeo Clemente Modigliani (born July 12, 1884 in Livorno, † January 24, 1920 in Paris) was an Italian Jewish draftsman, painter and sculptor. Today's fame is based primarily on his nudes, which were perceived as scandalous in his time. He is known for his portraits and nudes in a modern style characterized by a surreal elongation of faces, necks, and figures that weren't well received in his lifetime but are in great demand today. Modigliani spent his youth in Italy, where he studied ancient and renaissance art until he moved to Paris in 1906. There he met important artists such as Pablo Picasso and Constantin Brâncuși. Until 1912 Modigliani exhibited highly stylized sculptures with Cubists from the d'Or section in the Salon d'Automne. Modigliani had little success during his lifetime, but gained great popularity after his death. His life was marked by a lung disease. In a feverish dream he is said to have recognized his calling to art, at the age of 35 he died of tubercular meningitis. The information about Modigliani's life is based on only a few authenticated documents, so that legends were formed about him, especially after his death. Modigliani's oeuvre consists mainly of paintings and drawings. From 1909 to 1914, however, he mainly devoted himself to sculpture. The main motif is the human being, both in the pictures and in the sculptures. There are also few pictures with landscape motifs. Modigliani's interior scenes and still lifes are not known. Modigliani often referred to the Renaissance in his works, but also took up other elements such as the African art popular at the time. On the other hand, it cannot be assigned to any of the contemporary styles, such as Cubism or Fauvism. During his life Amedeo Modigliani had little success with his art, it was only after his death that he achieved greater popularity and his works of art fetched high prices. • 58, Peter Paul Rubens

1618 The Rape of the Daughters of Leucippus Rubens Peter Paul 224,0 x 210,5 cm Oil on canvas Alte Pinakothek, Munich, Germany © akg-images Artist's Story Inquire Now 58 Art ID: Peter Paul Rubens (also Pieter Pauwel Rubens or latinized Petrus Paulus Rubens, born June 28, 1577 in Siegen, † May 30, 1640 in Antwerp) was a painter of Flemish origin. He was one of the most famous baroque painters and diplomat of the Spanish-Habsburg crown. Peter Paul Rubens lived during the Dutch Golden Age. He is considered to be the most influential artist in the Flemish baroque tradition. Rubens' highly charged compositions relate to scholarly aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and hugely popular Baroque style emphasized the movement, color, and sensuality that followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter Reformation. Rubens was a painter who made altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and historical paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. He was also a prolific designer of cartoons for the Flemish tapestry workshops and the Frontispiece for the publishers in Antwerp. Rubens not only ran a large workshop in Antwerp that produced paintings popular with nobles and art collectors throughout Europe, but he was also a classically trained humanist scholar and diplomat who was tutored by both Philip IV of Spain and Charles I and knighted by England. Rubens was a prolific artist. The catalog of his works by Michael Jaffé contains 1,403 works, apart from many copies made in his workshop. His commissioned works were mainly history paintings that included religious and mythological subjects as well as hunting scenes. He painted portraits, mainly of friends, and self-portraits, and later in life he painted several landscapes. Rubens designed tapestries and prints as well as his own house. He also supervised the short-lived decorations of the Austrian Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand's royal entry into Antwerp in 1635, and he wrote a book of illustrations of the palaces in Genoa, published in 1622 as Palazzi di Genova. The book helped spread the Genoese palace style throughout northern Europe. Rubens was an avid art collector and owned one of the largest collections of art and books in Antwerp. He was also an art dealer and is known to have sold a significant number of works of art to George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham. He was one of the last great artists to consistently use wooden panels as a support medium, even for very large works, but he also used canvases, especially when works had to be shipped long distances. For altarpieces, he sometimes painted on slate to reduce reflection problems. 1772 Still Life with Oranges and Walnuts Melendez Luis 61,0 x 81,3 Oil on canvas The National Gallery, London, UK © akg-images Artist's Story Inquire Now 87 Art ID: Luis Eugenio Meléndez or Luis Egidio Meléndez (* 1716 in Naples; † 11 July 1780 in Madrid) was a Spanish painter of still lifes. He was the pupil of Louis-Michel van Loo (1707-1771). Although he received little recognition during his lifetime and died in poverty, Meléndez is considered the greatest Spanish still-life painter of the 18th century. His mastery of composition and light, as well as his remarkable ability to convey the volume and texture of individual objects, enabled him to transform the most mundane cuisine into powerful images. He belonged to a family of painters, but his promising career in figure painting ran aground after his father's dispute with the Academy in Madrid. He applied twice to the king to become a court painter, but he was not given an official post. Luis Egidio Meléndez de Rivera Durazo and Santo Padre was born in the Spanish dominion of Naples. His family moved to Spain soon after. His father, uncle, brother and two sisters were all painters. His father Francisco was instrumental in founding the Royal Academy in Madrid in 1744, and his son's self-portrait of 1746 shows him there as a promising student. After a dispute, both father and son were expelled from the Academy and turned to miniature painting in the 1750s. The series of about 100 still lifes, dates from the last twenty years of his life. Often planned in pairs, they range from large compositions, sometimes including landscapes, as in Flemish and Neapolitan still lifes, to smaller and more intense paintings, usually in vertical form and which are also typically Spanish. • 126, Claude Monet

1887 Fields in spring Monet Claude 74,3 x 93,0 cm Oil on canvas Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, Stuttgart, Germany © ARTOTHEK Artist's Story Inquire Now 126 Art ID: Claude Monet (* 14 November 1840 in Paris; † 5 December 1926 in Giverny, born Oscar-Claude Monet) was a French painter, a founder of French Impressionist painting and the most consistent and prolific exponent of that movement's philosophy of expressing one's perceptions in front of nature, particularly in relation to landscape painting in the open air. • 81, Canaletto Giovanni Antonio Canal

1735-1740 The Grand Canal at the Church of the Salute Canal (Canaletto) Giovanni Antonio (Canaletto) 119,0 x 153,0cm Oil on canvas Musée du Louvre, Paris, France © akg-images / Erich Lessing Artist's Story Inquire Now 81 Art ID: Giovanni Antonio Canal (*7 October 1697 in Venice ; † 19. April 1768 in Venice), commonly known as Canaletto (Italian: [kanaˈletto]), was an Italian painter from the Republic of Venice, considered an important member of the 18th-century Venetian school. Painter of city views or vedute, of Venice, Rome, and London, he also painted imaginary views (referred to as capricci), although the demarcation in his works between the real and the imaginary is never quite clearcut. He was further an important printmaker using the etching technique. In the period from 1746 to 1756 he worked in England where he painted many views of London and other sites including Warwick Castle and Alnwick Castle. He was highly successful in England, thanks to the British merchant and connoisseur Joseph "Consul" Smith, whose large collection of Canaletto's works was sold to King George III in 1762. Canaletto learned painting in the workshop of his father Bernardo Canal, who produced stage sets for theatre performances. He became famous for his paintings of his hometown Venice as well as for Capricci. They are captivating because of their almost photo-realistic precision and richness of detail. To achieve this precision, he used a camera obscura as an aid. Antonio Canal is to be distinguished from his nephew Bernardo Bellotto, who worked in a very similar way and later also used the artist's name "Canaletto". Antonio Canal's works are altogether more light, mostly more cheerful and also brighter than those of his nephew. One of Canaletto's patrons and clients was the English consul in Venice Joseph Smith, who also commissioned Antonio Visentini in 1728 with the engravings for Canaletto's Venetian vedute under the title Venetiarum nobis Prospectus, thus ensuring the dissemination of the works among the English nobility travelling on the Grand Tour. The paintings were either acquired by the English nobles through Smith or ordered directly from England. Thus in 1731-1732 the 4th Duke of Bedford commissioned 24 paintings, which Antonio Canal executed from 1732 to 1736. This was followed by commissions from the 3rd Duke of Marlborough for a further 20 paintings, and in 1738 Henry Howard, 4th Earl of Carlisle, ordered 5 large-scale canvases. After the outbreak of the War of the Austrian Succession in 1740 the number of his commissions declined. In 1746 Canal went to England for ten years, after he had heard about the living conditions there from Jacopo Amigoni, who had spent several years there as an artist, and won the Duke of Richmond as a patron. The paintings he produced there have a lighter and more vivid effect. They are among the best representations of London in the 18th century. He spent the last years of his life back in Venice. His pictures became darker, but were still full of surprises.
