He introduced the new naturalistic artistic epoch north of the Alps. Because of his perfect painting technique and his sense of realistic representation, he was even called the "king among painters" by many authors. He took employment in the Hague around 1422 when he was already a master painter with workshop assistants, and was employed as painter and valet de chambre with John III the Pitiless, ruler of Holland and Hainaut. After John's death in 1425, he was later appointed as court painter to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, working in Lille until he moved to Bruges in 1429 where he lived until his death. He was highly regarded by Philip and undertook a number of diplomatic visits abroad, including to Lisbon in 1428 to explore the possibility of a marriage contract between the duke and Isabella of Portugal. About 20 surviving paintings are confidently attributed to him, as well as the Ghent Altarpiece and the illuminated miniatures of the Turin-Milan Hours, all dated between 1432 and 1439. Ten are dated and signed with a variation of his motto ALS ICH KAN (As I (Eyck) can), a pun on his name, which he typically painted in Greek characters. Van Eyck painted both secular and religious subject matter, including altarpieces, single-panel religious figures and commissioned portraits. His work includes single panels, diptychs, triptychs, and polyptych panels. He was well paid by Philip, who sought that the painter was secure financially and had artistic freedom so that he could paint "whenever he pleased". Van Eyck's work comes from the International Gothic style, but he soon eclipsed it, in part through a greater emphasis on naturalism and realism. He achieved a new level of virtuosity through his developments in the use of oil paint. He was highly influential, and his techniques and style were adopted and refined by the Early Netherlandish painters. Madonna of Chancellor Rolin Artist's Story More from This Artist... Load more... In addition to over 1700 paintings, he produced numerous prints and drawings. Munch is considered a trailblazer for the expressionist direction in modernist painting. His first exhibition in Germany caused a scandal ("Munch case"). Subsequently, he enjoyed an early reputation in Central Europe as an epoch-making new creator. Today, his idiosyncrasy and status are also recognized in the rest of Europe and the world. Munch's paintings focus on man and his essential emotional experiences, from love to grief and death. In them Munch processed mainly autobiographical experiences and adventures. The artist painted important motifs again and again in different versions, including many of his major works grouped together in the so-called Life Frieze, among them The Scream, Madonna, Vampire, Melancholy, Death in the Sick Room, or The Dance of Life. • 166, Gustav Klimt

Litzlberg am Attersee 1914-1915 166 Art ID: Klimt Gustav $ 59000000 110,0 × 110,0 cm Oil on canvas Residenzgalerie Salzburg, Austria © ARTOTHEK Request for Rent Inquire Now Artist's Story Digital room visualization | Art Mockup Studio Digital room visualization - example only | Digitale Raumvisualisierung - Beispielabbildung > < Gustav Klimt (*14 July 1862 in Baumgarten near Vienna, today 14th district; † 6 February 1918 in Vienna, 9th district) symbolist painter and one of the most famous members of the Viennese Art Secession movement. His major works include paintings, murals, sketches and other art objects, many of which are on display at the Vienna Secession Gallery. Klimt's main motif was the female body, and his works are characterized by an overt eroticism - nowhere is this more evident than in his numerous pencil drawings. Klimt's work is characterized by the elegant golden or colored decoration, often phallic in form, that conceals the more erotic positions of the drawings on which many of his paintings are based. This can be seen in Judith I (1901) and in The Kiss (1907-1908) and especially in Danaë (1907). One of the most common subjects Klimt used was that of the dominant woman, the femme fatale. Art historians note a variety of influences that contribute to Klimt's distinctive style, including Egyptian, Minoan, classical Greek, and Byzantine inspirations. Klimt also drew inspiration from the engravings of Albrecht Dürer, late medieval European painting, and the Japanese Rimpa school. His mature works are characterized by a rejection of earlier naturalistic styles and use symbols or symbolic elements to convey psychological ideas and emphasize art's "freedom" from traditional culture. • 125, Claude Monet

The Argenteuil Bridge 1840-1926 125 Art ID: Monet Claude $ 85000000 60,5 x 80,0 cm Oil on canvas National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., USA © Liszt Collection – ARTOTHEK Request for Rent Inquire Now Artist's Story Digital room visualization | Art Mockup Studio Digital room visualization - example only | Digitale Raumvisualisierung - Beispielabbildung > < Claude Monet (* 14 November 1840 in Paris; † 5 December 1926 in Giverny, born Oscar-Claude Monet) was a French painter, a founder of French Impressionist painting and the most consistent and prolific exponent of that movement's philosophy of expressing one's perceptions in front of nature, particularly in relation to landscape painting in the open air. The term "Impressionism" derives from the title of his painting Impression, soleil levant (Impression, Sunrise), exhibited in 1874 at the first Salon des Refusés (Exhibition of the Committee), which Monet and his collaborators organised as an alternative to the Salon de Paris. The early work up to the mid-1860s comprises realistic paintings, some of which Monet exhibited at the Paris Salon. In the late 1860s Claude Monet began to paint Impressionist paintings. An example of his paintings from this creative period is Impression, Sunrise, a harbour view of Le Havre, which gave the name to the whole movement. He thus moved away from the taste of the time, influenced by the traditional art academies, which worsened his financial situation. In the 1870s Monet took part in some of the Impressionist exhibitions, which also included artists such as Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Edgar Degas, and was particularly encouraged by the art dealer Paul Durand-Ruel. Monet's desire to document the French landscape led him to paint the same scene over and over again to capture the changing light and passing of the seasons. From 1883 Monet lived in Giverny, where he bought a house and land and began an extensive landscape project that included lily ponds, which would become the subject of his most famous works. He began painting the water lilies in 1899, first in vertical views with a Japanese bridge as the central feature, and later in the series of large-scale paintings that occupied him continuously for the next 20 years of his life. Monet's financial situation remained strained until the 1890s. It was during this period that Monet developed the concept of the series, according to which he painted a motif in different light moods. He also began to lay out his famous garden in Giverny, which he subsequently also used as a motif for his paintings. He is best known for developing the painting techniques known as chromoluminarism and pointillism. Georges-Pierre Seurat was the third child of Ernestine Faivre and Antoine-Chrysostome Seurat. He was born on December 2, 1859 in Paris into a middle-class family. He entered the École des Beaux-Arts in 1878. He then studied with Henri Lehman. Together with artists such as Paul Signac, Albert Dubois-Pilllet and Odilon Redon, he was responsible for the Salon des Indépendents, which they established as an alternative to the state-sponsored salon exhibitions. Seurat's Conté colored pencil drawings are less famous than his paintings, but they have also garnered much critical acclaim. Seurat's artistic personality combined characteristics that should normally be opposed and incompatible: on the one hand his extreme and delicate sensitivity, on the other hand a passion for logical abstraction and an almost mathematical precision of the mind. His large-format work A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte (1884–1886) changed the direction of modern art through the initiation of Neo-Impressionism and is one of the icons of painting of the late 19th century. Seurat is also praised for his technique of pointillism, which almost scientifically breaks down the color surface into dots of color that blend from a distance. He was a co-founder and leading representative of the art movement called Nouveau Réalisme in France. Le Rose du bleu (RE 22), originally part of Yves Klein's legendary Menil collection, is one of the defining masterpieces of Yves Klein's diverse, eclectic and influential oeuvre. It has been included in every major Yves Klein exhibition that has taken place. A vast, nearly two-metre-high monochrome canvas spectacularly adorned with nine massive sea-sponges and thousands of scattered pebbles to form a magical organic and otherworldly landscape both saturated by and radiating a deep rose madder hue, it is by far the largest and most important example of the series of monochrome pink sponge-reliefs that Klein first began to make in 1960. With its poetic and mysterious title of Le Rose du bleu (RE 22) ('The Rose of Blue') this work is also a signature example not only of the series to which it belongs but also of the unique colour theory that came to dominate and distinguish so much of the work that Klein made during the last two years of his life. From the golden tomb-like Ci-gît l'espace to the large multicoloured Shrouds, Anthropometries, fire-sculptures and his final Fire-Colour paintings, almost all of Klein's most important late works make explicit reference to this spiritual concept of a blue-gold-pink trinity of colour. And, it was as an exemplar of this colour-theory that Le Rose du bleu (RE 22) was first exhibited alongside other selected masterpieces from his oeuvre at the great retrospective exhibition of Klein's work held at the Haus Lange in Krefeld in January 1961. Klein only gave titles to some of his favorite and most important works. The rare and enigmatic title of Le Rose du bleu (RE 22), with its suggestion of the pink or pink color of the work that appears to emerge from the “blue”, refers to Klein's notion of “immaterial” blue, “immortal” gold and 'physical' rose or pink which together form an interdependent sacred trilogy of colors. This was a theory that Klein first developed around 1959, and in its context the color pink was considered representative of the material resurrection of the presence of the immaterial in the body or the flesh. With their absorbative and highly material "living" sponges attached to a monochrome color plane, Klein's sponge reliefs are the epitome (Ultramarine International Klein Blue), but in the context of Klein's spiritual trinity of color, the corporeal, material color of rose or pink became, as the title of Re 22 directly suggests, a color, if not a more appropriate one than blue. Yves Klein was an important figure in post-war European art. He was a leading member of the French art movement Nouveau réalisme, founded in 1960 by the art critic Pierre Restany. Klein was a pioneer in the development of performance art and is considered an inspiration and precursor of Minimal Art as well as Pop Art. He worked in the era of the Dutch Golden Age, during which the country experienced a period of political, economic and cultural prosperity. The scope of Jan Vermeer's complete works is very small, with only 37 paintings known today, although further titles have survived from old auction records. Vermeer's first works were history paintings, but he became known for his genre scenes, which make up a large part of his work. The best-known works through today's reception are The View of Delft and The Girl with the Pearl Earrings. Due to the small number of known paintings, in the 19th century, paintings by other artists were wrongly attributed to him. Today, however, his body of work is generally accepted by researchers. Cézanne's work is assigned to different styles: From an art-historical point of view, Cézanne's works make him one of the pioneers of Classical Modernism. While his early works were still characterized by Romanticism - such as the murals in the Jas de Bouffan country house - and Realism, he arrived at a new pictorial language through intensive study of Impressionist forms of expression, which attempted to consolidate the deliquescent pictorial impression of Impressionist works. He abandoned the illusionistic distant effect, broke the rules established by the representatives of Academic Art, and strove for a renewal of traditional creative methods based on the Impressionist color space and color modulatory principles. His painting provoked incomprehension and ridicule among contemporary art critics. Until the late 1890s, it was mainly fellow artists such as Pissarro, Monet, and Renoir, as well as art collectors and the gallery owner Ambroise Vollard, who became aware of Cézanne's work and were among the first buyers of his paintings. Vollard opened the first solo exhibition in his Paris gallery in 1895, which led to a broader examination of the artist's work. Of the many artists who took their cue from Cézanne's work after his death, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Georges Braque and André Derain deserve special mention. The contrasting orientation of the painterly works of the aforementioned artists reveals the complexity of Cézanne's oeuvre. From an art historical point of view, Cézanne's works rank him among the pioneers of Classical Modernism. Cézanne's pictorial subjects were often bathers, the landscape around the Montagne Sainte-Victoire mountains, still lifes, and portraits of his model, his lover and later wife, Hortense Fiquet. When his father Hans died a wealthy widower in 1609, Balthasar van der Ast went to live with his elder sister Maria, who was married to the flower painter Ambrosius Bosschaert the Elder (1573-1621). Bosschaert's influence can be clearly felt in van der Ast's early works. From 1619 at the latest, he lived in Utrecht, where he was admitted to the Guild of St Luke. It is assumed that Jan Davidsz de Heem (1606-1683/1684) was his pupil. From 1632 Balthasar van der Ast lived in Delft and married Margrieta Jans van Bueren there in 1633. The couple had two daughters named Maria and Helena. He died in Delft in December 1657 and was buried there in the Oude Kerk, the "old church". In his painting, Balthasar van der Ast specialised above all in the depiction of flowers, fruits and snail shells, which he depicted in mostly small-format pictures. His pictorial compositions are often enlivened by insects, sometimes also by lizards. He painted the Chinese bowls, which were much sought-after in his time and came into the possession of wealthy Dutchmen due to the flourishing trade with East Asia, with great care and attention to detail. The insects, the beetles, the flies and other small creatures partly have a symbolic function. The delicate butterfly, for example, indicates the rapid perishability of the blossoms, while other insects are supposed to refer to the perishable nature of the fruit. In his flower paintings, van der Ast did not always adhere to the seasons: On several occasions, for example, he depicted flowers together in one picture that did not blossom at the same time. Woman with a Fan 1919 200 Art ID: Modigliani Amedeo $ 56000000 100,0 x 65,0 cm Oil on canvas Musée National d’Art Moderne, Centre Pompidou, Paris, France © Peter Willi – ARTOTHEK Request for Rent Inquire Now Artist's Story Digital room visualization | Art Mockup Studio Digital room visualization - example only | Digitale Raumvisualisierung - Beispielabbildung > < Amedeo Clemente Modigliani (born July 12, 1884 in Livorno, † January 24, 1920 in Paris) was an Italian Jewish draftsman, painter and sculptor. Today's fame is based primarily on his nudes, which were perceived as scandalous in his time. He is known for his portraits and nudes in a modern style characterized by a surreal elongation of faces, necks, and figures that weren't well received in his lifetime but are in great demand today. Modigliani spent his youth in Italy, where he studied ancient and renaissance art until he moved to Paris in 1906. There he met important artists such as Pablo Picasso and Constantin Brâncuși. Until 1912 Modigliani exhibited highly stylized sculptures with Cubists from the d'Or section in the Salon d'Automne. Modigliani had little success during his lifetime, but gained great popularity after his death. His life was marked by a lung disease. In a feverish dream he is said to have recognized his calling to art, at the age of 35 he died of tubercular meningitis. The information about Modigliani's life is based on only a few authenticated documents, so that legends were formed about him, especially after his death. Modigliani's oeuvre consists mainly of paintings and drawings. From 1909 to 1914, however, he mainly devoted himself to sculpture. The main motif is the human being, both in the pictures and in the sculptures. There are also few pictures with landscape motifs. Modigliani's interior scenes and still lifes are not known. Modigliani often referred to the Renaissance in his works, but also took up other elements such as the African art popular at the time. On the other hand, it cannot be assigned to any of the contemporary styles, such as Cubism or Fauvism. During his life Amedeo Modigliani had little success with his art, it was only after his death that he achieved greater popularity and his works of art fetched high prices. • 38, Pieter Brueghel the Elder

The Triumph of Death 1562 38 Art ID: Brueghel the Elder Pieter $ 185000000 117,0 x 162,0 cm Oil on panel Museo del Prado, Madrid, Spain © akg-images Request for Rent Inquire Now Artist's Story Digital room visualization | Art Mockup Studio Digital room visualization - example only | Digitale Raumvisualisierung - Beispielabbildung > < Pieter Brueghel the Elder * c. 1525 probably in Breda; † 9 September 1569 in Brussels), called de Drol "the Droll" or "Peasant Brueghel", was a painter of the Dutch Renaissance. He is popularly known for his depictions of peasant life in the Duchy of Brabant (Netherlands and Flanders) in the 16th century. Pieter Brueghel the Elder was known for his landscapes and peasant scenes (so-called genre painting); he was a pioneer in making both types of subject the focus in large paintings. He was a formative influence on Dutch Golden Age painting and later painting in general in his innovative choices of subject matter, as one of the first generation of artists to grow up when religious subjects had ceased to be the natural subject matter of painting. He also painted no portraits, the other mainstay of Netherlandish art. After his training and travels to Italy, he returned in 1555 to settle in Antwerp, where he worked mainly as a prolific designer of prints for the leading publisher of the day. Only towards the end of the decade did he switch to make painting his main medium, and all his famous paintings come from the following period of little more than a decade before his early death, when he was probably in his early forties, and at the height of his powers. As well as looking forwards, his art reinvigorates medieval subjects such as marginal drolleries of ordinary life in illuminated manuscripts, and the calendar scenes of agricultural labours set in landscape backgrounds, and puts these on a much larger scale than before, and in the expensive medium of oil painting. He does the same with the fantastic and anarchic world developed in Renaissance prints and book illustrations. He is sometimes referred to as "Peasant Brueghel", to distinguish him from the many later painters in his family, including his son Pieter Brueghel the Younger (1564–1638). From 1559, he dropped the 'h' from his name and signed his paintings as Brueghel; his relatives continued to use "Brueghel" or "Breughel". • 29, Albrecht Altdorfer

The Battle of Alexander at Issus 1528-1529 29 Art ID: Altdorfer Albrecht $ 55000000 158,5 x 120,3 cm Oil on panel Alte Pinakothek, Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen, Munich, Germany © akg-images Request for Rent Inquire Now Artist's Story Digital room visualization | Art Mockup Studio Digital room visualization - example only | Digitale Raumvisualisierung - Beispielabbildung > < Albrecht Altdorfer, also Albrecht Altdorffer (* c. 1480 perhaps in Altdorf near Landshut or in Regensburg; † 12 February 1538 in Regensburg), was a German painter, engraver and master builder of the Renaissance. Along with Wolf Huber, he is considered an important representative of the so-called Danube School, a stylistic movement along the Danube in Bavaria and Austria. The artists of this art movement are also known as the "wild painters of the Danube". Together with Albrecht Dürer, as whose pupil he is regarded, he is seen as the founder of the Nuremberg minor masters. Altdorfer was born in Regensburg or Altdorf around 1480. He acquired an interest in art from his father, Ulrich Altdorfer, who was a painter and miniaturist. At the start of his career, he won public attention by creating small, intimate modestly scaled works in unconventional media and with eccentric subject matter. He settled in the free imperial city of Regensburg, a town located on the Danube River in 1505, eventually becoming the town architect and a town councillor. His first signed works date to c. 1506, including engravings and drawings such the Stygmata of St. Francis and St. Jerome. His models were niellos and copper engravings from the workshops of Jacopo de Barbari and Albrecht Dürer. Around 1511 or earlier, he travelled down the river and south into the Alps, where the scenery moved him so deeply that he became the first landscape painter in the modern sense, making him the leader of the Danube School, a circle that pioneered landscape as an independent genre, in southern Germany. From 1513 he was at the service of Maximilian I in Innsbruck, where he received several commissions from the imperial court. During the turmoil of the Protestant Reformation, he dedicated mostly to architecture; paintings of the period, showing his increasing attention to architecture, include the Nativity of the Virgin. In 1529, he executed The Battle of Alexander at Issus for Duke William IV of Bavaria. In the 1520s he returned to Regensburg as a wealthy man, and became a member of the city's council. He was also responsible for the fortifications of Regensburg. In that period his works are influenced by artists such as Giorgione and Lucas Cranach, as shown by his Crucifixion. In 1535, he was in Vienna. He died at Regensburg in 1538. The remains of Altdorfer's surviving work comprises 55 panels, 120 drawings, 125 woodcuts, 78 engravings, 36 etchings, 24 paintings on parchment, and fragments from a mural for the bathhouse of the Kaiserhof in Regensburg. This production extends at least over the period 1504–1537. He signed and dated each one of his works. The Battle of Alexander at Issus Artist's Story More from This Artist... Load more... August 1780 in Montauban; † 14. Januar 1867 in Paris) was a French neoclassical painter. Ingres was strongly influenced by earlier artistic traditions and strove to become the guardian of academic orthodoxy against the rising Romantic style. Although he considered himself a painter of history in the tradition of Nicolas Poussin and Jacques-Louis David, his painted and drawn portraits are considered his greatest legacy. His expressive distortions of form and space made him an important precursor of modern art and influenced Picasso, Matisse, and other modernists. Born into a modest family in Montauban, he travelled to Paris to study in David's studio. In 1802, he made his Salon debut, winning the Prix de Rome for his painting "The Ambassadors of Agamemnon in the Tent of Achilles." By the time he left for his stay in Rome in 1806, his style - revealing his close study of the Italian and Flemish Renaissance masters - was fully developed and would change little for the rest of his life. While working in Rome and later Florence from 1806 to 1824, he regularly sent paintings to the Paris Salon, where they were objected by critics who found his style bizarre and archaic. During this period, he received few commissions for the historical paintings he wanted to paint, but was able to support himself and his wife as a portrait painter and draftsman. He was finally recognized at the Salon in 1824, when his raphaelesque painting, The Vow of Louis XIII met with acclaim and Ingres was acknowledged as the leader of the neoclassical school in France. Although the income from commissions for historical paintings enabled him to paint fewer portraits, his Portrait of Monsieur Bertin marked his next popular success in 1833. The following year, his indignation at the harsh criticism of his ambitious composition The Martyrdom of Saint Symphorian caused him to return to Italy, where he assumed directorship of the French Academy in Rome in 1835. He became director of the academy in 1835. In 1841 he returned to Paris for good. In his later years he painted new versions of many of his earlier compositions, a series of designs for stained glass windows, several important portraits of women and The Turkish Bath, the last of his several Orientalist paintings of the female nude, which he completed at the age of 83. Along with Gustav Klimt and Oskar Kokoschka, he is one of the most important visual artists of Viennese modernism. A protégé of Gustav Klimt, Schiele was an important figurative painter of the early 20th century. His work is known for its intensity and raw sexuality, as well as the many self-portraits the artist produced, including nude self-portraits. The twisted body shapes and expressive line that characterize Schiele's paintings and drawings mark the artist as an early exponent of Expressionism. Schiele was convinced that sexuality was the driving force of all existence. He regarded it as the motor for the cultural development of the Western world. Thus, the naked or only scantily clad depiction of man is also the central theme in Egon Schiele's works. Schiele had a somewhat traumatic and disturbed childhood. His father, Adolf, was a station master in the Austrian Sate Railways and young Egon became obsessed with trains. He constantly drew them over and over and the obsession became so consuming that his father destroyed his sketchbooks. Schiele also displayed incestuous tendencies toward his younger sister, Gerti. Concerned with his son's behavior, Adolf broke down the children's locked door, only to discover them developing film. When Egon was sixteen, he took his twelve-year-old sister to a hotel room in Trieste without permission, but it is unknown what transpired there. Egon's confused sexuality can be seen throughout his work, which often contains contorted figures, explicitly nude and nude self-portraits. Schiele attended the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts and then became a student of Gustav Klimt, whose influence can be seen in some of his works. Although he experienced professional success, his life was also marred by a series of public struggles. In 1912 he was arrested for seducing a girl below the age of consent. Those charges were eventually dropped, but he was convicted of exhibiting erotic drawings in a place accessible to children. The judge burned one of the offending drawings over a candle in the courtroom. In 1914 he married a respectable girl named Edith Harms. After avoiding conscription for over a year, Schiele did serve in World War I, first escorting Russian prisoners and then as a clerk. He continued to paint throughout this time. In autumn of 1918, Edith, who was six months pregnant, died of Spanish flu, and Egon died three days later. In addition to his trademark figurative paintings, Schiele also did a number of intense landscapes. 71, Rembrandt van Rijn

The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp 1632 71 Art ID: van Rijn Rembrandt $ 120000000 169,5 x 216,5 cm Oil on canvas Mauritshuis, Den Haag, Netherlands © ARTOTHEK Request for Rent Inquire Now Artist's Story Digital room visualization | Art Mockup Studio Digital room visualization - example only | Digitale Raumvisualisierung - Beispielabbildung > < Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (* 15 July 1606 in Leiden; † 4 October 1669 in Amsterdam; known by his given name Rembrandt) is considered one of the most important and well-known Dutch artists of the Baroque period. An innovative and prolific master in three media, he is generally regarded as one of the greatest visual artists in the history of art and art history. Unlike most 17th century Dutch masters, Rembrandt's works display a wide range of styles and subjects, from portraits and self-portraits to landscapes, genre scenes, allegorical and historical scenes, and biblical and mythological themes. His contributions to art came at a time of great wealth and cultural achievement that historians call the Dutch Golden Age, when Dutch art (especially Dutch painting), though in many ways unlike the Baroque style that dominated Europe, was highly productive and innovative, producing important new genres. Like many artists of the Dutch Golden Age, such as Jan Vermeer of Delft, Rembrandt was an avid art collector and dealer. Rembrandt never went abroad, but was considerably influenced by the work of the Italian masters and Netherlandish artists who had studied in Italy, such as Pieter Lastman, the Utrecht Caravaggists, the Flemish Baroque and Peter Paul Rubens. After achieving youthful success as a portrait painter, Rembrandt's later years were marked by personal tragedy and financial hardships. Yet his etchings and paintings were popular during his lifetime, his reputation as an artist remained high and he taught many important Dutch painters for twenty years. Nevertheless, he suffered considerable financial problems at times, went bankrupt in 1656 and died in poverty. Rembrandt's portraits of his contemporaries, self-portraits and illustrations of scenes from the Bible are considered his greatest creative triumphs. His self-portraits form a unique and intimate autobiography in which the artist portrays himself without vanity and with utmost sincerity. Rembrandt's most important contribution in the history of printmaking was the transformation of the etching process from a relatively new reproduction technique into a true art form, together with Jacques Callot. His reputation as the greatest etcher in the history of the medium was established during his lifetime and has never been questioned since. Few of his paintings left the Dutch Republic while he lived, but his prints were circulated throughout Europe, and his wider reputation was initially based on them alone. In his work he exhibited knowledge of classical iconography, which he adapted to the demands of his own experience. Thus the depiction of a biblical scene was influenced by Rembrandt's knowledge of the specific text, his assimilation of classical composition and his observations by the Jewish population of Amsterdam. Because of his compassion for the human condition, he has been called "one of the great prophets of civilisation". The French sculptor Auguste Rodin said: "Compare me to Rembrandt! What a sacrilege! With Rembrandt, the colossus of art! We should prostrate ourselves before Rembrandt and never compare anyone to him!" He introduced the new naturalistic artistic epoch north of the Alps. With Franz Marc, he was the founder of the editorial group "Der Blaue Reiter," which opened its first exhibition in Munich on December 18, 1911. Der Blaue Reiter emerged from the Neue Künstlervereinigung München (New Munich Artists' Association), founded in 1909, of which he was for a time chairman. During the Weimar Republic, he was a teacher at the Bauhaus. Kandinsky was an Expressionist artist and one of the pioneers of abstract art. He is often credited by his own account as the creator of the world's first abstract painting, but this may be predated by giving the year 1910 instead of 1913. Recent research points to the fact that in 1907 the painter Hilma af Klint had already created an abstract painting with "The Ten Greatest, No. 2, Childhood, Group IV, 1907." Wassily Kandinsky is best known for his bold, abstract paintings which celebrate colour and form. Although inspired by music, colour and the creative artistic movements developing during that time, Kandinsky took up painting much later in life and his early works included a number of landscapes and outdoor scenes, but even then his love of colour and exquisite use of tone and hue were prevalent. Renowned artists such as Cezanne, Gauguin and Matisse were all painting at this time and revolutionising art with the introduction of impressionism in a variety of forms. Many of the Impressionists shunned the use of black, instead creating depth of form and shadow by combining or applying darker hues together. Kandinsky had seen the development of pointillism as well as the cubism movement and there are elements of these influences in many of his works.
