*1974 Europe Grill Evelyn 3164 Artist ID: Brief Biography Since 2023 | Senior Artist at the University of Applied Arts Vienna 2020 | Art Scholarship from the State of Lower Austria Since 2010 | Freelance Artist 2002 – 2009 | Textile Designer at Swarovski in Wattens 2002 – 2012 | Member of the textile art group tex art 2002 | Graduated with distinction from the University of Art and Design Linz 2002 | Erwin Wenzl Award for outstanding university work 2000 – 2002 | Teaching Assistant in the Screen Printing Department at the University of Art and Design Linz 1998 | Trained in traditional Yoruba textile techniques in Nigeria 1997 – 2001 | Costume Designer at "Theater im Hof – Enns" 1995 – 2001 | Teacher of Recorder and Flute at the Music School in St. Valentin 1993 – 1994 | College for Fashion and Clothing Technology Linz 1993 | Graduated with honors from the HBLA for Artistic Design Linz Artistic Journey Evelyn Grill is known for her large-scale works and series, where she has developed a unique artistic genre that seamlessly blends screen printing with painting and textile techniques. Her creative process is a captivating mix of spontaneous, intuitive actions and meticulously executed, time-intensive interventions, all without a preconceived conceptual plan. This approach stands in stark contrast to her otherwise rational and structured personality. Driven by an inner urge to create something she perceives as both "beautiful" and "true," Evelyn captures what her inner vision reveals in this deeply personal process. Her works are not merely the result of her instinctive approach but also reflect the experience gained from countless experiments combined with precise craftsmanship. In recent years, her commitment to sustainability has become a significant part of her artistic practice. Through upcycling, she breathes new life into used materials, reassembling and repurposing them in ways that bring them into the present. She often incorporates previously used paper stencils into collages, pieces together fabric samples into patchwork-like surfaces, and uses print cloths with overlapping layers of color and pattern as the starting point for new creations. Evelyn's passion for textile craftsmanship is evident in the stitching that adorns many of her pieces. The sewing machine becomes a drawing tool, with figures and landscapes emerging through the embroidery process to take on concrete forms. The seemingly endless thread serves as a connection between these forms, symbolizing the interconnectedness of all things and people—a theme that resonates deeply in her work. Join the Elite Circle Our Mission and Actions At THE ART HUB, our mission is initially focused on addressing a profound imbalance within the art world, specifically catering to women artists. In the current landscape, a mere 5% to 15% of artworks traded at auctions are created by women, starkly contrasted by the overwhelming 85% to 95% of works by male artists. This disparity is not only confined to auctions but is also prevalent in exhibitions, where male-created art significantly overshadows that of their female counterparts. By concentrating our efforts on female artists, THE ART HUB aims to counteract this imbalance and champion women within the art community. This initiative is designed to amplify the visibility of women artists, making their creations more accessible to a wider audience, and ultimately striving for a more balanced representation of genders within art auctions and exhibitions. By prioritizing women in art, our platform boldly advocates for equality and diversity within the art sector, signaling a commitment to reshaping and enriching the cultural landscape. When her parents opened a florist shop, any unsold flowers were taken home and that’s when she started to draw them; mostly to scale and in coloured pencil-but that was the moment! From sketches as a child, Natalie progressed to painting oversize oils of sumptuous, magnified flowers. She believes the scale of her work was influenced by her time working as a scenic artist – a role she relished, and which took her around the world. Current pieces incorporate story-like elements, ideas gained while out on walks with her dog and the curiosities she finds. These help to create a visual narrative. Natalie aims to convey the feelings and sense of pleasure she feels while being surrounded by nature, she wants the viewer to have an experience that encompasses sensations beyond that of the image itself. Therefore, the scale of her work is important. By enlarging the scale, the nature of the subject is intensified, and enables the viewer to become surrounded by the beauty or whimsy of the subject. Natalie’s technique had developed through intense observation and trial and error. There is always room for development, and she enjoys this process of challenging herself. Her work has currently been shown in Tokyo, Singapore, London, New York, and Australia, as well as in Shropshire. She had an article published in Artists and Illustrator’s magazine in 2007, Shropshire Living Magazine 2021 and Collect Art magazine in 2023 and has delivered several masterclasses as the prestigious West Dean College, in Chichester. Statement, vision and goals Whilst my work is discernibly representative, I wish the viewer to feel drawn into what becomes for me a speculative visual story combining colour, whimsy, natural life and occasionally humour. The medium is oil built up in many layers to create a vivid and translucent finish, this process also supports a depth and intensity of colour enhancing the drama. I’ve been trying to get to the core of why I have these recurring themes running through my work and after much ruminating I’ve realised the natural life element is enormously important. The natural world displays incredible diversity and tenacity adjacent with transience and fragility. You see the interconnectedness of nature, that you are part of something bigger, something vital that pays no attention to theology or wealth, and I delight in that liberation. Adjacent to these core values, occasionally acting as a kind of ‘theatrical’ setting, is a still life aspect to my work, drawing ideas from neglected or discarded objects and places- creating a visual connection. It’s these aspects that develop their own provinence, their own stories that I find interesting, and realising that a narrative is fundamental to my painting by combining the two is fascinating and ever evolving. I would simply like to continue the direction I’m going currently; there is so much to explore and develop, I’ve no idea what’s around the next corner. I would though like to see my work progress as surface pattern design, something I have already started to develop. I can see these big bold patterns in my mind- would be fabulous!
