Discover Limited Edition The idealistic roots can probably be traced back to ancient Greece. The philosophical adjustment for the classification and appreciation of the formal qualities of an oeuvre is therefore already derived from a statement by Plato: "Straight lines and circles are ... not only beautiful ... but eternally and absolutely beautiful". Basically, Plato wanted to express that non-representational images (e.g. simple geometric forms) possess an absolute, unchanging beauty. Accordingly, a work can be appreciated and valued merely on the basis of its lines and colours - it is not obliged to represent a natural object or a representational scene. Abstract art as we know it today, on the other hand, is much younger and originated as a departure from classical and traditional academic painting in Europe in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Shortly after 1900, the first painters and sculptors began to move further and further away from the reproduction of the real world. Wassily Kandinsky's path from a stylising painting committed to the Munich Art Nouveau style is well known, through numerous stages of development to abstract compositions culminating in the pure non-objectivity of organic and geometric forms. For artists like Kandinsky, the depiction of reality was no longer decisive. The Russian artist wanted to recognise the only truth in the inner being of man, and this inner being, the world of feelings, was to be reflected on the canvas in abstract colours and forms. The art historian Wilhelm Worringer had already written an essay on "Abstraction and Empathy" in 1907. It said: "The tendency towards abstraction is the consequence of a deep insecurity of man in the face of the world." Kandinsky laid down a programmatic foundation with his 1910 essay: On the Spiritual in Art laid the theoretical foundation for the new direction in painting. Whether he was the pioneer in the history of the development of abstraction is, however, debatable. According to his own statements, he painted his first non-objective picture in 1910. Today, however, it is assumed that Kandinsky predated this picture; he probably did not paint it until 1913. The Czech František Kupka had already begun to paint abstract pictures in 1911. However, according to a report by the journalist and historian Julia Voss in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung in April 2011, Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) is considered the first artist to paint abstract pictures. After a series of small-format paintings in November 1906, she created her first large-format painting in 1907. Other pioneers of abstract painting were the artists Sonia Delaunay-Terk, Robert Delaunay and Francis Picabia, who were active in France, the Dutchman Piet Mondrian and Sophie Taeuber-Arp, who worked in Switzerland and France. In sculpture, the works that were actually non-objective were not created until around 1920 by the Ukrainian sculptor Alexander Archipenko, the Russian Constructivist El Lissitzky and the English sculptor Henry Moore. • 16, Altdorfer

*1480-1538 Europe Altdorfer Albrecht 16 Artist ID: Around 1511 or earlier, he travelled down the river and south into the Alps, where the scenery moved him so deeply that he became the first landscape painter in the modern sense, making him the leader of the Danube School, a circle that pioneered landscape as an independent genre, in southern Germany. From 1513 he was at the service of Maximilian I in Innsbruck, where he received several commissions from the imperial court. During the turmoil of the Protestant Reformation, he dedicated mostly to architecture; paintings of the period, showing his increasing attention to architecture, include the Nativity of the Virgin. Albrecht Altdorfer, also Albrecht Altdorffer (* c. 1480 perhaps in Altdorf near Landshut or in Regensburg; † 12 February 1538 in Regensburg), was a German painter, engraver and master builder of the Renaissance. Along with Wolf Huber, he is considered an important representative of the so-called Danube School, a stylistic movement along the Danube in Bavaria and Austria. The artists of this art movement are also known as the "wild painters of the Danube". Together with Albrecht Dürer, as whose pupil he is regarded, he is seen as the founder of the Nuremberg minor masters. Altdorfer was born in Regensburg or Altdorf around 1480. He acquired an interest in art from his father, Ulrich Altdorfer, who was a painter and miniaturist. At the start of his career, he won public attention by creating small, intimate modestly scaled works in unconventional media and with eccentric subject matter. He settled in the free imperial city of Regensburg, a town located on the Danube River in 1505, eventually becoming the town architect and a town councillor. His first signed works date to c. 1506, including engravings and drawings such the Stygmata of St. Francis and St. Jerome. His models were niellos and copper engravings from the workshops of Jacopo de Barbari and Albrecht Dürer. In the current landscape, a mere 5% to 15% of artworks traded at auctions are created by women, starkly contrasted by the overwhelming 85% to 95% of works by male artists. This disparity is not only confined to auctions but is also prevalent in exhibitions, where male-created art significantly overshadows that of their female counterparts. By concentrating our efforts on female artists, THE ART HUB aims to counteract this imbalance and champion women within the art community. In 1529, he executed The Battle of Alexander at Issus for Duke William IV of Bavaria. In the 1520s he returned to Regensburg as a wealthy man, and became a member of the city's council. He was also responsible for the fortifications of Regensburg. In that period his works are influenced by artists such as Giorgione and Lucas Cranach, as shown by his Crucifixion. In 1535, he was in Vienna. He died at Regensburg in 1538. The remains of Altdorfer's surviving work comprises 55 panels, 120 drawings, 125 woodcuts, 78 engravings, 36 etchings, 24 paintings on parchment, and fragments from a mural for the bathhouse of the Kaiserhof in Regensburg. *1932 Europe Richter Gerhard 98 Artist ID: In 1962 he painted the first work in his catalog: Tisch, an oil painting that was painted from a press photo. Both an everyday photographer and a painter, he reproduces the motifs of his photos on canvas. Landscapes, still lifes and intimate scenes thus shape a work, which, however, essentially consists of abstract works, which he also calls abstract images without exception. The documentary sources of Gerhard Richter's works: press photos, his own photos, the amateur photos he collects, were brought together in an atlas that was first exhibited in 1972. Gerhard Richter (* 9 February 1932 in Dresden) is a German painter, sculptor and photographer. Richter has created both abstract and photorealistic paintings, as well as photographs and glass works. His works are among the most expensive of any living artist on the art market. Richter's works have been recognised since the 1980s as a "unique and remarkable artistic experience". As a polymorphous painter, he sometimes deals with figurative themes, but also produces abstract works. After his first training as a painter, he was accepted on his second candidacy to the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden, where he received a master's degree, which enabled him to benefit from a workshop for three years. His interest in abstract painting, especially Jackson Pollock and Lucio Fontana, motivated his move to the West in 1961. Finally he settled in Düsseldorf, studied with Karl-Otto Götz and got to know Sigmar Polke, Blinky Palermo and the future gallery owner Konrad Fischer. What the four art students had in common was their rejection of established art movements, with the result that traditional exhibition opportunities remained closed to them. Richter and Kuttner already knew each other from the Dresden Art Academy, Polke and Lueg met at the Düsseldorf Art Academy between 1961 and 1962, where they studied with Karl Otto Götz. At the beginning of 1963, they decided to organise a joint exhibition under their own direction. They rented a shop from the city of Düsseldorf at Kaiserstraße 31 A, the walls of which they first had to paint white. In a letter Richter wrote on behalf of the group, presumably in May 1963, to Fox's Tönende Wochenschau, the term appeared for the first time: "For the first time in Germany, we are showing pictures for which the terms Pop Art, Junk Culture, imperalist or Capitalist Realism, new representationalism, Naturalism, German Pop and some similar are characteristic." He also painted no portraits, the other mainstay of Netherlandish art. After his training and travels to Italy, he returned in 1555 to settle in Antwerp, where he worked mainly as a prolific designer of prints for the leading publisher of the day. Only towards the end of the decade did he switch to make painting his main medium, and all his famous paintings come from the following period of little more than a decade before his early death, when he was probably in his early forties, and at the height of his powers. As well as looking forwards, his art reinvigorates medieval subjects such as marginal drolleries of ordinary life in illuminated manuscripts, and the calendar scenes of agricultural labours set in landscape backgrounds, and puts these on a much larger scale than before, and in the expensive medium of oil painting. He does the same with the fantastic and anarchic world developed in Renaissance prints and book illustrations. He is sometimes referred to as "Peasant Brueghel", to distinguish him from the many later painters in his family, including his son Pieter Brueghel the Younger (1564–1638). From 1559, he dropped the 'h' from his name and signed his paintings as Brueghel; his relatives continued to use "Brueghel" or "Breughel". Discover Limited Edition Appropriation art is a form of expression in contemporary artistic creation. It is usually classified as conceptual art. In a narrower sense, Appropriation Art is when artists consciously and strategically copy the works of other artists, whereby the act of copying and the result itself are to be understood as art (otherwise one speaks of plagiarism or forgery). Strategies include "borrowing, stealing, appropriating, inheriting, assimilating.... Being influenced, inspired, dependent, hunted, obsessed, quoting, rewriting, revising, redesigning.... Revision, re-evaluation, variation, version, interpretation, imitation, approximation, improvisation, supplement, accretion, prequel... Pastiche, paraphrase, parody, piracy, forgery, homage, mimicry, travesty, shan-zhai, echo, allusion, intertextuality and karaoke." In a broader sense, Appropriation Art can be any art that deals with found aesthetic material, e.g. advertising photography, press photography, archival images, films, videos, etc. These can be exact, detailed copies; however, manipulations of the size, colour, material and medium of the original are also often made in the copy. This appropriation in Appropriation Art can be done with critical intent or as homage. Appropriation was introduced through the Pictures exhibition curated by Douglas Crimp at New York's Artists Space in the autumn of 1977. The early artists selected were Sherrie Levine, Jack Goldstein, Phillip Smith, Troy Brauntuch and Robert Longo. Cindy Sherman had had a solo show at Artists Space the year before; she was mentioned in Douglas Crimp's revised version of the catalogue text that appeared in the Marxist art magazine October in 1979. The Whitney Museum of American Art in New York and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles held major retrospectives of the Pictures Generation in 1989, and in 2009 the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York showed the early work of thirty artists from the 1970s New York art scene in the exhibition The Pictures Generation, 1974-1984, curated by Douglas Eklund. This Pictures Generation includes Louise Lawler, Barbara Kruger, Richard Prince, Sarah Charlesworth, and from the art scene in Buffalo (New York State) came Robert Longo, Cindy Sherman, Nancy Dwyer, Charles Clough and Michel Zwack. The most important "hotbed" of the movement was John Baldessari's seminar at the California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles, where David Salle, Jack Goldstein, James Welling, Matt Mullican, Barbara Bloom, Ross Bleckner and Eric Fischl had studied. Mel Bochner's first exhibition in 1966, "Working Drawings and Other Visible Things on Paper Not Necessarily Meant to Be Viewed as Art" at the Gallery of the School of Visual Arts in New York, is considered the first exhibition of the conceptual art movement. In 1969, the first museum exhibition of conceptual art in Germany took place at the Museum Morsbroich in Leverkusen. The execution of the artwork is of secondary importance and does not have to be done by the artist himself. The focus is on the concept and idea, which are considered equally important for the artistic work. In this sense, finished paintings and sculptures are replaced by sketches, written documents, instruction texts or, under certain circumstances, artist's books, which develop their own aesthetic qualities. One of the aims is the "dematerialisation" of the artwork and the involvement of the viewer. Familiar ways of seeing, concepts and contexts of the world are questioned, new rules are invented. Contexts, meanings and associations are worked with. Theorists of conceptual art are Mel Bochner, Sol LeWitt, Art & Language, Joseph Kosuth and Victor Burgin. An artistic role model of this movement was Marcel Duchamp. He distinguished his art from "retinal art", which acts predominantly on the eye (for example, in a gimmicky way) rather than as an idea or linking of meaning in thought. This approach often makes conceptual art seem elitist, brittle and difficult to access to the layperson. Some works of conceptual art can only be understood through an examination of the artist and his or her thinking. Discover Limited Edition Pictorialism is a style of art photography. The aim of the style was not to produce a mere image of the subject, capturing a moment in reality, but to achieve a symbolic representation of states of mind or fundamental values. Pictorialism flourished between the end of the 19th century and the First World War, in Japan until about 1925; however, pictorialist photographs were still being taken in some cases until the end of the 1950s. The declared aim of pictorialism was to establish photography as a fully-fledged means of artistic expression. Stylistically, it was initially oriented towards naturalism in painting in particular, but then also towards impressionism and symbolism. Frequently applied stylistic features of pictorialist photographs are reduced contour sharpness, light scattered like mist, careful choice of detail, flowing transitions, preference for night and fog scenes, 'artistic' subjects (landscapes, portraits, nudes) and intensive post-processing of the prints, but possibly also of the negative before the positive is made (e.g. by Frank Eugene). Despite the often low impression of sharpness and tonal richness that pictorialist positives leave on the viewer, most of the surviving negatives of the pictures are taken with the full possible tonal range and certainly also with sharpness corresponding to the state of the art. A noticeably often used prop in pictorialist photographs, for example in the work of Alice Boughton, Anne Brigman or Clarence Hudson White, is the crystal ball, also in a modified form such as a glass bowl, which was supposed to symbolise a state of spiritual perfection and unity. Discover Limited Edition Neo-Baroque (also: New Baroque or Second Baroque) is the name of a style in architecture, sculpture and, with reservations, in music (overarching musical style term: neoclassicism). Neo-baroque, a manifestation of historicism, is assigned to the second half of the 19th century. It began around 1860, but spread mainly after 1880. Napoleon III created the first large neo-baroque buildings in 1857 with the Tuileries and in 1860 with the Paris Opera. In Bavaria, Herrenchiemsee Palace was built, which recreated the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles. Neo-Baroque was particularly popular for theater buildings, as the Baroque had brought with it a heyday of all theatrical art forms. In the late phase of Historicism, the previous orientation towards the Renaissance receded into the background and Baroque forms were used for a wide variety of building tasks, sometimes also for villas and other representative residential buildings. Discover Limited Edition The term muralismo is a movement and art form that emerged in the 1920s after the Mexican Revolution. The Spanish term murales refers to wall painting in public spaces. The works reflect national, socially critical and historical content. The main tool is the brush, but other techniques such as spray guns are also used. Most murals, however, are painted in fresco technique. José Vasconcelos, in his function as Secretario de Educación Pública at the time, is named as the initiator of the art movement. The government commissioned a group of artists to paint large, often monumental murals on prestigious public buildings to teach the largely illiterate population about the country's history, especially the indigenous parts of Mexican culture and the country's progress. The first murales were created at the Escuela Nacional Preparatoria in Mexico City. The artists were almost free in the representation of their content. Many images heroised the working and peasant people and their popular leaders, depicted scenes of the revolution patriotically, condemned large-scale land ownership and idealised the pre-Hispanic life of the country's indigenous original population. The most important representatives were the so-called Los Tres Grandes ('The Big Three'), José Clemente Orozco, Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros. Most of the Mexican mural painters were male. The first representative of this physically demanding art form was Aurora Reyes Flores, who painted her depiction of Atentado a los Maestros Rurales in 1936. Many of today's well-known artists from Mexico were active in left-wing politics, some of them also travelled through European countries, exchanged ideas with artists there and let themselves be influenced by European art in their further work. The advertising graffiti Bardas de Baile, which is widespread in Mexico, can be understood as a popular commercial variation of Muralismo.
