He is popularly known for his depictions of peasant life in the Duchy of Brabant (Netherlands and Flanders) in the 16th century. Pieter Brueghel the Elder was known for his landscapes and peasant scenes (so-called genre painting); he was a pioneer in making both types of subject the focus in large paintings. He was a formative influence on Dutch Golden Age painting and later painting in general in his innovative choices of subject matter, as one of the first generation of artists to grow up when religious subjects had ceased to be the natural subject matter of painting. He also painted no portraits, the other mainstay of Netherlandish art. After his training and travels to Italy, he returned in 1555 to settle in Antwerp, where he worked mainly as a prolific designer of prints for the leading publisher of the day. Only towards the end of the decade did he switch to make painting his main medium, and all his famous paintings come from the following period of little more than a decade before his early death, when he was probably in his early forties, and at the height of his powers. As well as looking forwards, his art reinvigorates medieval subjects such as marginal drolleries of ordinary life in illuminated manuscripts, and the calendar scenes of agricultural labours set in landscape backgrounds, and puts these on a much larger scale than before, and in the expensive medium of oil painting. He does the same with the fantastic and anarchic world developed in Renaissance prints and book illustrations. He is sometimes referred to as "Peasant Brueghel", to distinguish him from the many later painters in his family, including his son Pieter Brueghel the Younger (1564–1638). From 1559, he dropped the 'h' from his name and signed his paintings as Brueghel; his relatives continued to use "Brueghel" or "Breughel". Discover Limited Edition Minimalism or Minimal Art is an art movement in the visual arts (painting, sculpture, object art) that emerged in the early 1960s in the USA as a counter-movement to the gestural painting of Abstract Expressionism. Minimalism has been represented in architecture since the 1980s. Minimalism strives for objectivity, schematic clarity, logic and depersonalisation. Typical of minimalist sculptures and objects are the reduction to simple and clear, mostly geometric basic structures (so-called primary structures), often in serial repetition, industrial production as well as the use of finished products, e.g. stone and metal tiles (Carl Andre), neon tubes (Dan Flavin), steel frames (Donald Judd), or oversized enlargement (Ronald Bladen, Tony Smith). This gave rise to their own orders, with their own rules and laws, which operated with opposites such as beginning and end, fullness and emptiness. Other representatives of minimalist sculpture are John McCracken, Sol LeWitt, Walter De Maria, Robert Morris, Larry Bell, Anne Truitt and Fred Sandback. Although colours and forms were also reduced to the simplest in painting (to basic structures, monochrome and geometric surfaces), minimalism is mainly applied to three-dimensional art. Based on constructivist ideas, important pioneers of this painterly conception of art were James Rosenquist, Ellsworth Kelly, Frank Stella, Jo Baer or Agnes Martin. Richter has created both abstract and photorealistic paintings, as well as photographs and glass works. His works are among the most expensive of any living artist on the art market. Richter's works have been recognised since the 1980s as a "unique and remarkable artistic experience". As a polymorphous painter, he sometimes deals with figurative themes, but also produces abstract works. After his first training as a painter, he was accepted on his second candidacy to the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden, where he received a master's degree, which enabled him to benefit from a workshop for three years. His interest in abstract painting, especially Jackson Pollock and Lucio Fontana, motivated his move to the West in 1961. Finally he settled in Düsseldorf, studied with Karl-Otto Götz and got to know Sigmar Polke, Blinky Palermo and the future gallery owner Konrad Fischer. In 1962 he painted the first work in his catalog: Tisch, an oil painting that was painted from a press photo. Both an everyday photographer and a painter, he reproduces the motifs of his photos on canvas. Landscapes, still lifes and intimate scenes thus shape a work, which, however, essentially consists of abstract works, which he also calls abstract images without exception. The documentary sources of Gerhard Richter's works: press photos, his own photos, the amateur photos he collects, were brought together in an atlas that was first exhibited in 1972. In addition to his personal exhibitions, he works as a teacher at various art schools, particularly in Hamburg, Düsseldorf and Halifax (Nova Scotia, Canada). He is also the teacher of the artist Pia Fries. He has received numerous awards, including the Young Western Art in Recklinghausen in 1967, the Arnold Bode Prize at the Documenta in Kassel in 1981, the Oskar Kokoschka Prize in Vienna in 1985, and the Wolf Prize for the Arts in Israel 1994/95 and the Praemium Imperiale in Japan in 1997. 180 Colors Artist's Story World of Art Betty 270 Art ID: 1988 | 102,2 x 72,4 cm Oil on canvas 50000000 $ Gerhard Richter World of Art Abstraktes Bild, Dunkel (613-2) 271 Art ID: 1986 | 260,0 x 200,0 cm Oil on canvas 30000000 $ Gerhard Richter World of Art Candle 272 Art ID: 1982 | 80,0 x 100,0 cm Oil on canvas 40000000 $ Gerhard Richter More from This Artist... Gauguin's Post-Impressionist work strongly influenced the Nabis and Symbolism; he was a co-founder of Synthetism and became a pioneer of Expressionism. He thus played an important role in the development of European painting. Gauguin was not appreciated until after his death and is known for his experimental use of colour and synthetic style, which differed from Impressionism. Towards the end of his life he spent ten years in French Polynesia. The paintings from this period show people or landscapes from this region. His work had an influence on the French avant-garde and many modern artists such as Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse. He is known for his relationship with Vincent and Theo van Gogh. Gauguin's art became popular after his death, partly due to the efforts of dealer Ambroise Vollard, who held exhibitions of his work late in his career and organized two important posthumous exhibitions in Paris. Gauguin was an important figure in the Symbolist movement as a painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, and writer. His expression of the inherent meaning of subjects in his paintings under the influence of the Cloisonnist style paved the way for Primitivism and a return to pastoralism. He was also an influential proponent of wood engravings and woodcuts as an art form. Paul Gauguin returned to Tahiti in the fall of 1895 and was soon plagued by physical ailments and financial difficulties. Nevertheless, in 1896-1897 he painted a group of impressive canvases in a larger format than his usual works. He painted Why are you evil? No te aha oe riri? Why Are You Angry? on an earlier Tahitian composition, but changed the mood of the painting. Here the main figures are larger and detached from each other, their postures and characters more difficult to interpret. The questioning title encourages the viewer to search for some kind of narrative, but the paintings resist a definitive reading. Why Are You Angry ? Reinhard Fuchs, THE ART HUB is dedicated to correcting the profound imbalances in the art world, particularly for women artists. In an industry where only 5% to 15% of artworks traded at auctions are by women, compared to 85% to 95% by men, our initiative strives to shift this disparity. By focusing on female artists, THE ART HUB aims to enhance their visibility and presence in the art scene. Our goal is to make women's art more accessible to a broader audience and achieve a more balanced gender representation at art auctions and exhibitions, thereby contributing significantly to cultural diversity and promoting equality within the art sector. Women in Art & World of Art We are meticulously selecting 100 artists from our Women in Art | THE ART HUB initiative to be considered by the committee at MoCA Beijing. The committee will curate these submissions down to 20 final artists whose work will be showcased at the museum.
