  • 207, Marc Chagall

1915 Birthday Chagall Marc 80,6 x 99,7 cm Oil on cardboard Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Spain © Hans Hinz – ARTOTHEK Marc Chagall © Bildrecht, Wien 2021 Artist's Story Inquire Now 207 Art ID: Marc Chagall (born Moishe Shagal; * 7 July 1887 in Peskowatik near Vitebsk, now Belarus; † 28 March 1985 in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, France) was a French-Russian painter of Jewish religious affiliation. Chagall is considered one of the most important painters of the 20th century. He is often assigned to expressionism and referred to as a "painter-poet". An early modernist, he was associated with several major artistic styles and created works in a wide range of artistic formats, including painting, drawings, book illustrations, stained glass, stage sets, ceramics, tapestries and fine art prints. Art critic Robert Hughes referred to Chagall as "the quintessential Jewish artist of the twentieth century" (though Chagall saw his work as "not the dream of one people but of all humanity"). According to art historian Michael J. Lewis, Chagall was considered to be "the last survivor of the first generation of European modernists". For decades, he "had also been respected as the world's pre-eminent Jewish artist". Using the medium of stained glass, he produced windows for the cathedrals of Reims and Metz, windows for the UN and the Art Institute of Chicago and the Jerusalem Windows in Israel. He also did large-scale paintings, including part of the ceiling of the Paris Opéra. Before World War I, he travelled between Saint Petersburg, Paris, and Berlin. During this period he created his own mixture and style of modern art based on his idea of Eastern Europe and Jewish folk culture. He spent the wartime years in Soviet Belarus, becoming one of the country's most distinguished artists and a member of the modernist avant-garde, founding the Vitebsk Arts College before leaving again for Paris in 1923. He had two basic reputations, writes Lewis: as a pioneer of modernism and as a major Jewish artist. He experienced modernism's "golden age" in Paris, where "he synthesized the art forms of Cubism, Symbolism, and Fauvism, and the influence of Fauvism gave rise to Surrealism". Yet throughout these phases of his style "he remained most emphatically a Jewish artist, whose work was one long dreamy reverie of life in his native village of Vitebsk. "When Matisse dies," Pablo Picasso remarked in the 1950s, "Chagall will be the only painter left who understands what colour really is". • 13, Domenico Ghirlandaio

1488 Portrait of Giovanna Tornabuoni Ghirlandaio Domenico 77,0 x 49,0 cm Tempera on panel Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid, Spain © akg-images / André Held Artist's Story Inquire Now 13 Art ID: Domenico di Tommaso Curradi di Doffo Bigordi (2 June 1448 – 11 January 1494), proffesionally known as Domenico Ghirlandaio, also spelled as Ghirlandajo, was an Italian Renaissance painter born in Florence. Ghirlandaio was part of the so-called "third generation" of the Florentine Renaissance, along with Verrocchio, the Pollaiolo brothers and Sandro Botticelli. Ghirlandaio led a large and efficient workshop that included his brothers Davide Ghirlandaio and Benedetto Ghirlandaio, his brother-in-law Bastiano Mainardi from San Gimignano, and later his son Ridolfo Ghirlandaio. Many apprentices passed through Ghirlandaio's workshop, including the famous Michelangelo. Ghirlandaio's particular talent lay in his ability to posit depictions of contemporary life and portraits of contemporary people within the context of religious narratives, bringing him great popularity and many large commissions. • 22, Albrecht Duerer

1503 Great Piece of Turf Duerer Albrecht 41,0 x 31,5 cm Watercolor, pen and ink, mounted on cardboard Albertina, Graphische Sammlung, Wien, Austria © ARTOTHEK Artist's Story Inquire Now 22 Art ID: Albrecht Dürer the Younger (also Duerer; * 21 May 1471 in Nuremberg; † 6 April 1528 Nuremberg) was a German painter, graphic artist, mathematician and art theorist. His paintings, drawings, copper engravings and woodcuts make him one of the outstanding representatives of the Renaissance. Dürer established his reputation and influence across Europe when he was in his twenties due to his high-quality woodcut prints. He was associated with the most important Italian artists of his time, including Raphael, Giovanni Bellini and Leonardo da Vinci, and was patronised by Emperor Maximilian I from 1512. Dürer was recognised by both the Lutheran and Episcopal churches. Dürer's vast body of work includes engravings, his preferred technique in his later prints, altarpieces, portraits and self-portraits, watercoulors and books. The woodcuts are more Gothic than the rest of his work. His well-known engravings include the three master engravings Knight, Death and the Devil (1513), St Jerome in his Study (1514) and Melencolia I (1514). His watercolours mark him as one of the first European landscape artists, while his woodcuts revolutionised this medium. Dürer's introduction of classical motifs into northern art through his knowledge of Italian artists and German humanists secured his reputation as one of the most important figures of the northern Renaissance. This is underpinned by his theoretical treatises, which include principles of mathematics, perspective and ideal proportions. Albrecht Dürer was one of the most influential, versatile and important personalities in European art and is therefore often considered Germany's most famous painter. Unlike many of his contemporaries and predecessors, he was one of the few artists who also dealt with the creation of art in theory. It is therefore not surprising that, in addition to his numerous paintings, copperplate engravings and woodcuts, he also published several books dealing, for example, with human proportions or geometry. However, Dürer's fame is undoubtedly due in large part to his numerous pictures, which are rich in detail. In these he was always intent on depicting nature as faithfully as possible and showing every detail, no matter how small. An achievement that no other painter before or after him could surpass. In his home town of Nuremberg, Albrecht Dürer is one of the most important personalities and is still revered today. The Germanic National Museum located there conducts extensive research on the artist and also exhibits some of his works. In addition, there is the Albrecht Dürer House, a unique memorial site where Dürer himself lived and worked for almost 20 years. Today, the well-preserved and renovated burgher's house from 1420 is extensively museumised, making a visit worthwhile for everyone. • 201, Amedeo Modigliani

1917 Nude Sitting on a Divan – The Beautiful Roman Woman Modigliani Amedeo 100,0 x 65,0 cm Oil on canvas Private Collection Giraudon © Bridgeman Images Artist's Story Inquire Now 201 Art ID: Amedeo Clemente Modigliani (born July 12, 1884 in Livorno, † January 24, 1920 in Paris) was an Italian Jewish draftsman, painter and sculptor. Today's fame is based primarily on his nudes, which were perceived as scandalous in his time. He is known for his portraits and nudes in a modern style characterized by a surreal elongation of faces, necks, and figures that weren't well received in his lifetime but are in great demand today. Modigliani spent his youth in Italy, where he studied ancient and renaissance art until he moved to Paris in 1906. There he met important artists such as Pablo Picasso and Constantin Brâncuși. Until 1912 Modigliani exhibited highly stylized sculptures with Cubists from the d'Or section in the Salon d'Automne. Modigliani had little success during his lifetime, but gained great popularity after his death. His life was marked by a lung disease. In a feverish dream he is said to have recognized his calling to art, at the age of 35 he died of tubercular meningitis. The information about Modigliani's life is based on only a few authenticated documents, so that legends were formed about him, especially after his death. Modigliani's oeuvre consists mainly of paintings and drawings. From 1909 to 1914, however, he mainly devoted himself to sculpture. The main motif is the human being, both in the pictures and in the sculptures. There are also few pictures with landscape motifs. Modigliani's interior scenes and still lifes are not known. Modigliani often referred to the Renaissance in his works, but also took up other elements such as the African art popular at the time. On the other hand, it cannot be assigned to any of the contemporary styles, such as Cubism or Fauvism. During his life Amedeo Modigliani had little success with his art, it was only after his death that he achieved greater popularity and his works of art fetched high prices. • 89, Bellotto Bernardo Canaletto

1753-1754 The Market Square of Pirna Bernardo (Canaletto) Bellotto 134,0 x 238,0 cm Oil on canvas Gemäldegalerie, Alte Meister, Dresden, Germany © akg-images Artist's Story Inquire Now 89 Art ID: Bernardo Bellotto, called Canaletto (*30 January 1721 in Venice; † 17 October 1780 in Warsaw), was a Venetian painter known for his realistic vedute of European cities, notably Dresden, Vienna and Warsaw, in addition to Italian cities. Bernardo Bellotto, called Canaletto was the student and nephew of the famous Giovanni Antonio Canal Canaletto and sometimes used the latter's illustrious name, signing himself as Bernardo Canaletto. In Germany and Poland, Bellotto called himself by his uncle's name, Canaletto. This caused some confusion, however Bellotto’s work is more sombre in color than Canatello's and his depiction of clouds and shadows brings him closer to Dutch painting. Bellotto's style was characterized by elaborate representation of architectural and natural vistas, and by the specific quality of each place's lighting. It is plausible that Bellotto, and other Venetian masters of vedute, may have used the camera obscura in order to achieve superior precision of urban views. Bellotto was born in Venice, the son of Lorenzo Antonio Bellotto and Fiorenza Canal, sister of the famous Canaletto, and studied in his uncle's workshop. In 1742 he moved to Rome, where he produced vedute of that city. In 1744 and 1745 he travelled northern Italy, again depicting vedute of each city. Among others, he worked for Charles Emmanuel III of Savoy. From 1747 to 1758 he moved to Dresden, following an invitation from King August III of Poland. He created paintings of the cities Dresden and Pirna and their surroundings. Today these paintings preserve a memory of Dresden's former beauty, which was destroyed by bombing during World War II. His international reputation grew, and in 1758 he accepted an invitation from Empress Maria Theresa to come to Vienna, where he painted views of the city's monuments. In 1761 Bellotto left Vienna for Munich, where he spent almost a year. In a letter to her cousin Maria Antonia of Bavaria, Empress Maria Theresia had praised Bellotto's artistic achievements at the Viennese court. Consequently, he received commissions from the Bavarian ruling family. He painted a panoramic view of Munich and two vedute of Nymphenburg Palace for the elector of Bavaria. At the end of 1761, Bellotto returned to Dresden. Bellotto's urban scenes have the same carefully drawn realism as his uncle's Venetian views but are marked by heavy shadows and are darker and colder in tone and colour. When King August III of Poland, also an Elector of Saxony, who usually lived in Dresden, died in 1763, Bellotto's work became less important in Dresden. As a consequence, he left Dresden to seek employment in Saint Petersburg at the court of Catherine II of Russia. On his way to Saint Petersburg, however, Bellotto accepted an invitation in 1764 from Poland's newly elected King Stanislaus Augustus Poniatowski to become his court painter in Warsaw from 1768. Here he remained some 16 years, for the rest of his life, as court painter to the King, for whom he painted numerous views of the Polish capital and its surroundings for the Royal Castle in Warsaw, a complement to the great historical paintings Poniatowski commissioned from Marcello Bacciarelli. His initial commissions included painted decoration of the Ujazdów Castle between 1767 and 1770, of which a study of illusionistic vault is the only preserved example of profuse decoration lost in 1784 during the reconstruction of the castle into military barracks. In 1769 the painter and his son Lorenzo (1744–1770) accomplished another large royal commission – fourteen views of Rome, ancient and papal, based on the collection of etchings by Giovanni Battista Piranesi entitled Vedute di Roma. The collection was dispersed in the early nineteenth century and today various paintings can be admired in different museums in Russia – The Roman Forum as seen from the Capitol to the south-east and Piazza della Rotonda with Pantheon (Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow), View of the Piazza Navona (State Museum in Gorky), View of S. Maria Maggiore (Museum of Art in Khabarovsk) and in private collections. His paintings of Warsaw, 26 vedute painted between 1770–80 to embellish the so-called Panorama Room (later Canaletto Room) at the Royal Castle in Warsaw and later relocated to Russia, were restored to the Polish Government in 1921 and were used in the reconstruction of the city after its almost complete destruction by German troops during World War II. Bellotto's early work bears strong features of his uncle's style, becoming more individual and distinguished in later years with clear inspiration of Dutch landscape painting with massed clouds, cast shadows and rich foliage. His colouring is colder and characterized by a steely grey. The last period of the artist's work is assessed as distinct from the earlier stages with emphasis on the immediacy of observation, striving for a generic treatment of staffage, ability to capture the atmosphere of the place and visible transformation of his painting which become more colorful with warmer tones. For the first time he also undertook historical subjects including Election of Stanislaus Augustus (1778) for the King and Entry of Jerzy Ossoliński into Rome in 1633 (1779) commissioned by Józef Maksymilian Ossoliński. Bellotto created a school of painting which was later continued and developed by Zygmunt Vogel and Marcin Zaleski. Bernardo Bellotto died in Warsaw in 1780 and was buried in Capuchin Church at Miodowa Street. His younger brother was named Pietro Bellotto (1725 – c. 1805) and after collaborating with Canaletto and his brother, moved to France, where he was known as le Sieur Canalety and Pietro Bellotti di Caneletty. The brother was also referred to as Belloti, Belloty, Beloty, or Bellottit. • 84, Canaletto Giovanni Antonio Canal

1739-1742 The Rialto Bridge from the Nord Canal (Canaletto) Giovanni Antonio (Canaletto) 119,0 x 154,0 cm Oil on canvas Musée du Louvre, Paris, France © akg-images Artist's Story Inquire Now 84 Art ID: Giovanni Antonio Canal (*7 October 1697 in Venice ; † 19. April 1768 in Venice), commonly known as Canaletto (Italian: [kanaˈletto]), was an Italian painter from the Republic of Venice, considered an important member of the 18th-century Venetian school. Painter of city views or vedute, of Venice, Rome, and London, he also painted imaginary views (referred to as capricci), although the demarcation in his works between the real and the imaginary is never quite clearcut. He was further an important printmaker using the etching technique. In the period from 1746 to 1756 he worked in England where he painted many views of London and other sites including Warwick Castle and Alnwick Castle. He was highly successful in England, thanks to the British merchant and connoisseur Joseph "Consul" Smith, whose large collection of Canaletto's works was sold to King George III in 1762. Canaletto learned painting in the workshop of his father Bernardo Canal, who produced stage sets for theatre performances. He became famous for his paintings of his hometown Venice as well as for Capricci. They are captivating because of their almost photo-realistic precision and richness of detail. To achieve this precision, he used a camera obscura as an aid. Antonio Canal is to be distinguished from his nephew Bernardo Bellotto, who worked in a very similar way and later also used the artist's name "Canaletto". Antonio Canal's works are altogether more light, mostly more cheerful and also brighter than those of his nephew. One of Canaletto's patrons and clients was the English consul in Venice Joseph Smith, who also commissioned Antonio Visentini in 1728 with the engravings for Canaletto's Venetian vedute under the title Venetiarum nobis Prospectus, thus ensuring the dissemination of the works among the English nobility travelling on the Grand Tour. The paintings were either acquired by the English nobles through Smith or ordered directly from England. Thus in 1731-1732 the 4th Duke of Bedford commissioned 24 paintings, which Antonio Canal executed from 1732 to 1736. This was followed by commissions from the 3rd Duke of Marlborough for a further 20 paintings, and in 1738 Henry Howard, 4th Earl of Carlisle, ordered 5 large-scale canvases. After the outbreak of the War of the Austrian Succession in 1740 the number of his commissions declined. In 1746 Canal went to England for ten years, after he had heard about the living conditions there from Jacopo Amigoni, who had spent several years there as an artist, and won the Duke of Richmond as a patron. The paintings he produced there have a lighter and more vivid effect. They are among the best representations of London in the 18th century. He spent the last years of his life back in Venice. His pictures became darker, but were still full of surprises. • 10, Sandro Botticelli

1481 La Primavera Botticelli Sandro 203,0 x 314,0 cm Tempera on panel Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence, Italy © Bridgeman Images Artist's Story Inquire Now 10 Art ID: Sandro Botticelli (* 1 March 1445 in Florence; † 1510, buried 17 May 1510 Florence; also Alessandro di Mariano Filipepi or Sandro di Mariano di Vanni Filipepi, gen. Botticelli) was one of the most important Italian painters and draughtsmen of the early Renaissance. Botticelli's posthumous reputation suffered until the late 19th century, when he was rediscovered by the Pre-Raphaelites who stimulated a reappraisal of his work. Since then, his paintings have been seen to represent the linear grace of Early Renaissance painting. In addition to the mythological subjects for which he is best known today, Botticelli painted a wide range of religious subjects (including dozens of renditions of the Madonna and Child, many in the round tondo shape) and also some portraits. His best-known works are The Birth of Venus and Primavera, both in the Uffizi in Florence. Botticelli lived all his life in the same neighbourhood of Florence; his only significant times elsewhere were the months he spent painting in Pisa in 1474 and the Sistine Chapel in Rome in 1481–82 Only one of Botticelli's paintings, the Mystic Nativity (London, National Gallery), is inscribed with a date (1501), but others can be dated with varying degrees of certainty on the basis of archival records, so the development of his style can be traced with some confidence. He was an independent master for all the 1470s, which saw his reputation soar. The 1480s were his most successful decade, the one in which his large mythological paintings were completed along with many of his most famous Madonnas. By the 1490s his style became more personal and to some extent mannered. His last works show him moving in a direction opposite to that of Leonardo da Vinci (seven years his junior) and the new generation of painters creating the High Renaissance style, and instead returning to a style that many have described as more Gothic or "archaic."
