Pierre-Auguste Renoir (* 25 February 1841 in Limoges, Limousin; † 3 December 1919 in Cagnes-sur-Mer, Côte d'Azur), often just called Auguste Renoir, was one of the most important French Impressionist painters, who was a leading painter in the development of the Impressionist style. It has been said of one who celebrated beauty and especially feminine sensuality that "Renoir is the last representative of a tradition that leads directly from Rubens to Watteau."
He was the father of actor Pierre Renoir (1885-1952), filmmaker Jean Renoir (1894-1979) and ceramist Claude Renoir (1901-1969). He was the grandfather of filmmaker Claude Renoir (1913-1993), son of Pierre.
